Hi all,

I have a knackered 620ie Dark that has the furriest engine I've ever seen.  I will attempt to clean it up and try to get it running but I fear it may be a basket case.

If that is how it turns out I'll be looking to jump up a few (hundred) cc for more punch.  Legend has it that Monster engines are pretty much interchangeable but we all know how often legend gets it wrong.

So is it that easy or am I best off sticking with what I have?

Thanks.

Except from legal issues, it's not far from plug & play.

From memory: 695/750/800 easiest, at 900/1000 you need longer exhaust headers, maybe other intake manifolds, the ECU flashed+tuned.

The experts will have a clear answer about this  waytogo soon.

I'm no expert, but the diameter of the engine bolts changed somewhere along the way from 10 to 12 mm, IIRC. That's an easy fix. Also, the carby, and fuelie motors have different bracing in the carb/throttle body areas, and that can affect swaps.

93-2000 ran 10mm engine bolts.

2001 & later (your 620) run 12mm bolts.

As far as a swap, an 800 (get the oil cooler too) would be the simplest.  An ECU reflash for (if you can get it) a Ducati Performance (or DP) fuel/ignition map would be best.  800 engine could be from either an SS, M800ie or an S2R800.  The ‘07 & ‘08 engines ran 7mm valve stems.  Those can go soft at high mileage.  ‘03 up to ‘06 were 8mm valve stems & wore better with age.

My $0.02.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it all.

I think this bike is going to fight me all the way though as my first job was to sort the wobbly sidestand... threads in the engine casing are stripped! I've never seen a sidestand mounted direct onto a crankcase before so that's my first surprise.

Many more to come, I'm sure.

Be very sure  Grin laughingdp

The side stand is one of many typical Ducati manfacturer designs. Completely idiotic. We as humans tend to become happy when (if) we find and perform solutions, so after a while we call the serial Ducati idiocy CHARM or SOUL. Those who can't find happiness in such situations just walk away. Maybe they are the smart ones? Smart, but unintresting?

Most importantly; keep us posted  waytogo
