I've never noticed a dirt-bike style front disc guard like that on a non-dirt race bike; have I just not been paying attention? And I wonder about why - to keep the race brakes up to temp?   Huh?

They've been using 'em for a while, and yes, to keep the temps up, and even to the extent that they can use the carbon brakes in wet conditions.
