I wanted a set of pipes for off road or race days and was told the factory pipes get red hot because of the cat.

I didn't have a extra $1200 around for aftermarket ones.
Found a set on ebay $41 and cut them up.

so here are the pics.

I must say thanks to Ryanracer if I didn't know what was in the factory exhaust I wouldn't of cut in.

if anyone wants sound clips let me know I will post up before and after when I install these to test them out. I don't expect it to be a big difference the stock baffle is still in place.

Heat the outter sheild up and it falls off no need to beat with a mallet.

Two pcs as you can see

Cut open

Close up of cat

Ready to weld

Welded up

Painted with high temp BBQ paint for some rust protection.

Heat the shell back up and drop on make sure the bolt holes line up and let cool.

Just cause someone has to say something, given ur ability to weld, could u have tacked teh cat in place and gutted out the tube a little more. atleast u would be a little more environmentally friendly!

He man, do you say that to everyone that puts aftermarket pipes on their bikes?
Maybe I will weld the cat to my lawnmower, I'm sure is more  environmentally un-friendly than any bike...

this Idea behind this was to have a cooler exhaust. I have two young kids and the pipes are at hand level.
they are a 100 deg cooler checked with my temp gun without the cats. And are no longer a heat sink.
the added deeper tone was just a byproduct. No change to the baffle was made.

here are the vids

What else was/is in there? Is it just empty behind the cat - or tubes, chambers and fiber mats?

Just a baffle not fiber, if you want I have a extra set of 696 pipes(before I found out they are different)
I can get you a pic of the baffle

I'm not in the market, but thanks anyway!

Just curious because it apperas to be fewer steps than on previous stock cans.

He man, true but this is a Monster forum correct?

Spy, Have you heard clips of no baffle? they are just as loud as no pipes.
Way too loud for me.

I like the sound without the cats the tone is deeper about the same as some of the aftermarket pipes with DB killers installed.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the air—these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Ghettogarage, I read that keeping the cat retains the pressure.. and that the baffle provides the deeper tone. Have you noticed any difference in the throttle response without the Cat?

I guess I will have to work on two sets of pipes and carry one Bafflectomy and one catectomy

yup and only the new models have cat in cans. For the bikes with cats, there are more bikes with cats out of the exhaust can then there are in. so whats your point?

Again, stop being butt hurt.

Hey! The environment is an issue we should all be concerned about. Especially when you live in garbageville NYC!

He man,
LOL you got issues my friend. no ones "butt hurt".

Spy, yes I believe so, it maybe I'm just getting used to the bike but I feel it runs smoother at lower rpms thottle in.
one of the things I learned through this project was 696 and 796/1100 cans are different. The cat and baffle are different I would bet a 796/1100 can on a 696 may pick up some power and sound better.
