"Ringing" sound from my 796?

I've got a 2011 796ABS with about 4200km on it and I've got what sounds like a high pitch, ringing sound coming from it lately.  Sort of sounds like a washer vibrating on a bolt, but I don't think it is.  It's very slightly audible when revving while sitting still but very loud when at speed.  Usually around 5K and up.  I have no idea what it could be but the only mods to it are the Evo Tail Tidy, new levers and frame and axle sliders. It sort of sounds like its coming from the front left side, but it's the type of noise that sounds like its everywhere and the helmet doesn't make it any easier to pinpoint.  Any suggestions on what to check out?  If I can't figure it out I'm going to start by removing the sliders as that's close to when the noise started, but I'm not sure it was exactly at that time.  I'm stumped and can't stand the noise anymore.  Thanks. ....Steve

Finding any little black discs around where you park recently?

I'm not sure about the new gen monsters - but with previous air cooled ducs they had rubber discs inserted between the fins to damp fin ring. As they ate they shrink stiffen and fall out. Once out the fins are free to resonate

Another though - how's the chain? Is it properly tensioned?

It's garage parked and ridden daily but I haven't noticed anything on the ground.  I'll have a look for that. 

I cleaned the chain really well last night, among other things, while searching for the noise but I'll check the tensioning tonight.  It's pretty new and had it's first service but could the tension be out already?  I'll confirm tonight.

Check your chain tension, I had a sound just like you describe.

have you checked the springs that hold the exhaust together?

Heading out to put on my new mirrors as soon as I get my girls in bed. I'll check the chain tension and the exhaust springs for sure. Thanks for the ideas!!!

Exhaust springs seem good, chain tension is about 58mm so if anything it's a touch tight and I couldn't find any indication of missing rubber between the oil cooler fins. 

Could it be a clutch issue?  Sort of sounds like its coming from that area when I played with it tonight, but I'm not positive. Something to do with the clutch lever swap maybe, where it's not disengaging all the way?  I adjusted the set screw out a bit but couldn't test ride it because it started raining.

Any other suggestions on where to look?  No luck so far.

What I have determined is it comes and goes with RPM, and not speed and may be coming more from the left side of the bike than the right and if I had to guess, I'd say midway from front to back.  Other than that, I'm at a loss and it's driving me nuts!

I notice the exact same noise coming from my 1100 evo Yesterday when i went for a 200km ride. It sounds like its coming from the chain/front sprocket to me. If i find the cause ill let you know. I to have done the EVO tail tidy, levers, Leovince Slipon and oil cooler guard...... Very frustrating, I only have 2000km on it.

Cleaned the chain and problem solved. The chain looked clean and well lubricated. So I took it for a good ride to warm the chain then gave it a really good clean and lubrication. Have not heard the noise since.

check the front sprocket to see if its bolted in tight, ive seen pictures of the front sprocket bolts working its way off the shaft
does it make the noise when you ride or when you rev in place? could it be coming from the heads?(valve clearance)

I clean and lube my chain really well with wax at least once a week so I doubt that's it, but I wonder if the wax isn't doing a great job. 

I'll also have a look at the front sprocket and see if it's tight as well. Thanks.

I recently had a very similar issue with my 796 that turned out to be the check valve in the emissions cannister, believe it or not.  It sounded like a rattle at lower speeds but became more of a ringing a higher speeds.  Based on the sound and how it reacted to my inputs, I could have sworn it was somehow clutch-related.  Here is the thread:

You know..., come to think of it, I had what sounded like a clutch howl at lower speeds a couple of times when the bike was newish. Had the canister removed at the first service ~ 900 miles and haven't heard it since. You never know...

Thanks, I'll look around and see what's involved to remove that canister. If its not needed and could cause the sound, I'll just get rid of it. Thanks!
