M900 Leaky Tank Hinge Repair

Hi All,

I'm trying to fix the leaky tank hinge problem on my '94 900. I will do the KBS coating on the inside as soon as I can, but I want to JB weld it first to stop the leak. I tried to apply some today after cleaning the area with degreaser but it just fell off. What do I have to do to get it to stick?

Epoxy requires a bare metal surface to really stick. If not bare the paint has to be really scratched up with some scratches to the metal.

If you could get the area wire brushed, or better yet blasted it will stick.

I have to say I only got one to work doing it that way.

Fixed a small oil leak on an engine w similar to JB, just a little less metal in the mix to make it more gooey and stickey.

Slow 24 hour Araldit fixed the hinge leak on my tank, 10 years now since that repair. No inside treatment done.

Both requires wire brush to metal clean surface.

Thanks for all the help. So just to confirm, I want to be putting the epoxy around the join between the tank and the plate that hinge is welded to?

Yup...

pay close attention to the rearmost part of the plate.

That's where the flexing get's it's momentum.

I've done the leaky hinges on both my girlfriend's 2000 900 and my 2001 900 with JB weld. I did my bike about 7 years ago and never had a leak since.

My daughters have always commented on how much they like the smell in our garage (where our cars have not been in at least 10 years  ;D ).
Last fall I had the feeling that the gasoline component of this garage smell was getting increasingly dominant. Since the lawn mower did not smell any worse than usual, Ol'Faithful seemed the likely culprit.
Having had advice from THE source, and after checking the alternatives, the hinge bracket seemed to be the culprit.

Using a hot air gun, and a monstrous soldering iron inherited from my granpa, this is what I did using body soldering tin bar (or whatever that's called in english).

So far, it's been tight for about 5 hours ...  [roll]       

Monster 900-2002 (sold, alive and well in the UK), 749R / 1100 HYM combo for track days, wifes / my Monster Dark 800-2003 (not entirely "Dark" anymore and a personal favourite) , 50% of 900SSie -2000 track bike for rainy days-now with tuned ST2 motor and Microtec ECU. Also parked due to having been T-boned on track.

Nice work.

That will work as long as you don't stress the hinge again and crack your solder job.

My 03 M800 had the same issue and I took it to a local radiator repair shop.  For about 60 bucks they brazed the hinge and coated the inside of the tank.  They even pressure tested it.   Hasn't leaked a bit since.

JB weld will hold.....to a point.  spend the money and get it done right.  I spent $100 locally and it looks brand new.
Can we thin the gene pool?

That's a great price.

What did they coat it with?

Did they prime the heat affected area too?

I ended up doing mine with permetex cold weld. Holding up fine so far, although it hadn't been ridden yet.
