Last night while coming home, i hit some pot holes. okay maybe it was like 5 of them in a row. From experience, ive learned to stay on the gas lightly and just ride it out rather than try and brake while in one. On the last one  i heard a MASSIVE crunch. I thought to myself, crap i dented my exhaust pipe. Inspection revealed nothing. Thought my wheel was broken, didnt see anything, so i thought i might of just ran over a soda can or something.

So i continued to ride, and i make it to my friends house, the bike feels very unsettled. rear is drifty and front isnt planted. The bike is just downright scary to ride. it feels like someone is trying to force a tank slapper on me.  im on the highway at 20mph right before hitting the triboro bridge and pull over. and have a look see. I cant figure out whats wrong on the road and babied her for 40 miles home.

Turns out my brakes were locked up front....... and my bearing race burst open and i loss half of the ball bearings in my front wheel axle.

So, where can i find new bearings? I dont know what else is broken since i dont have much time to inspect till after finals are over.

Heres the pot holes. i pretty much managed to hit all the big ones in a row at 35-40mph. its not that they were deep, but that they werent gradual and once the front wheel hit the wall of the pothole the suspension couldnt take it.

and heres the damage.

Drive out the old bearings with a flat head screwdriver and a hammer (better a mallet).

Get some all-balls (or any other name brand) bearings on ebay or elsewhere.

Place a socket over the outer race (outer metal ring) and hammer in the new bearings. Make sure the socket is wide enough so that you don't hammer on the inner ring.

Note: Placing the new bearing in the freezer over night and using a heat gun on the wheel can help them slide in.

Oh, and you might want to consider posting this in Tech instead of the general forum.

no need to use bearings with fancy names, either.
you will find a bearing supply company locally.
just take one of your's in and they'll probably have them in stock and at a really low cost.
it's not like Ducati is making their own "special go-fast" bearings.

do you guys have the size? i was hoping i could just buy em today and have them by the end of the week so i can just pucn them out and replace it.

sofadriver

just punch one out and take it to the local bearing guy.
he can measure them or read and cross referance a number.
i'll bet you walk out the door in less than 5 minutes with new bearings in hand

gonna have to find the local bearing guy first.

JRK bearings on Cony Island Ave should be able to help you out.  Ave K ish I think.  The old ones are probably SKF should have the manufacturer and part# on them the race and can be cross referenced.  ECS also usually keeps them in stock.

But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

jut the opposite. Kui has great luck.  all this $hit happens to his bike and he comes out OK.

who else can ride 50 miles on a bike with half the front wheel bearings missing and frozen brakes (in NYC traffic) and come out unscathed?

who else drops his bike on loose gravel in PA, puts a hole in the case and drives it back to NY without issue?
