Well, things have perked up quite a bit here. A month ago we were almost to the point of standing around with nothing to do. Now, I have orders out into July. Normally if I'm at 4-5 weeks out that's steady, 6 weeks out = busy, beyond 6 weeks = wtf is happening. The year started slow but Q1 ended great and Q2 is off to the races. If this pace holds for the second half of the year I might actually have profit to pay taxes on  |

Too bad the chips you make aren't reusable for other industries.
Technically they are. Something like 80 to 90% of the material used in the world is composed of recycled scrap. We sell all our chips back to the local recycler. Out back we have a giant luger that we dump all our generic steel chips into. I've had it weigh as much as 18,000 pounds. Stuff that is actually valuable like stainless or brass bronze aluminum etc get saved in barrels. Once we have about 20 barrels we call for the truck and send that in. I've had at least one job where the dollar amount we got for the parts was equal to the dollar amount that we got for the chips. Meaning if I had a part that I sold for $10 I got $10 worth of chips from that same part as well. That's rare but it happens and I like it when it does! |

I meant as microchips. I know the recycle stream of commodities like that (same occurs in plastic injection mold, for example). And right now we are actually making money by recycling NiMh batteries as the scrap nickel is highly sought after (I think to make stainless steel). |

So much for profit. The instant I hit post here I'm writing a PO for a new horizontal machining center. https://www.okuma.com/products/mb-4000hOur old one is at the end of it's service life. The new mill isn't available until the end of October and I'm not sure my mill will make it that far. We've run the doors off it. My Okuma distributor went looking for someone that had this machine on order but hadn't taken delivery yet and had a willingness to swap with me. Luckily Daniel Defense was just such a customer! They had a mill coming in mid September and are willing to switch places with me. More to come... |
