40K on the 620, now what?

Soooo, many of you have seen my 620 over the years and I know I've come to love it; only once has it let me down due to the alternator/stator going out which was an easy fix..  Well, now the clutch is finally starting to give out in 5th and 6th gear, so instead of buying a new clutch I'm looking into an engine swap [evil]

Ducati guy has done it (http://urlm.in/fped) and I wanna do something similar..

Guzzitech from Torrance has a GT1000 engine for sale,(http://urlm.in/fpeh) but it's a wet clutch 1000DS, versus Ducati Guy's S2R1000 wet clutch swap, so things aren't exactly the same...

1) Will it bolt up? It looks like it will, but I can't be sure because the frames/ swingarms are so different.

2)  With an unlocked ecu, will the GT1000's wire harness plug into the 620's Gauge Cluster?  Having to buy less items = happier me.

3)  Any unforseen errors?  I'm a light person, so the extra weight doesn't scare me..  I hear I may have to transfer the fuel pressure regulator off the 620 which is no biggie and I'd prob fab up a custom exhaust set-up to make it more unique..  I would go straight to an S2R 1000DS engine, but I cannot find one local at a reasonable price... Heck, even an 800cc would be just fine~

ain't she ugly? :)

Best year ever made, Nick, it's a 2005.  Why the best year? Cause it's the year I own..hahaha

The thing about this project, is it's for fun; I don't want my bike to be more powerful, but that'd merely be a side-affect.  I just love turning wrenches..

I think swapping in an 800 would be pretty simple.

It's a bit bigger motor, a bit more power.
Really nearly the same engine as you have now.
The 800's are quite durable.

Hopping up your current motor is always an option.

Yeah I could beef up the 620 and all, but that many miles on it kinda defeats the purposeeee, especially when I can find a perfect excuse to get a ridiculously large engine for this lil 620.. hahaha

And in the end, I'd still have to replace the clutch... :/

Definitely at least go with a dry clutch 900ie or 1000DS engine. I wouldn't waste the time or money on another wet clutcher if I were going to the trouble of a swap. The 800 is a very sweet engine and quite easy to live with, but the power increase vs getting away with paying 620 insurance rates would be nice. Sounds like a fun project.

From what I understand if you have the stock ECU reflashed to the specs from the engine you plan on using that would save on the costs of needing a new ECU and gauge cluster.  A 1000ds would need dual output coils but I think the 620 wiring harness could be reused.
Engine upgrades could get you a nice increase in power, I think FBF claims 72 hp out of their 750 kit for the 620.  New pistons & replated cylinders should take care of most of the enine wear your 40k bike would have.  This winter I plan on converting my 620 to a 750 and upgrading to 800 heads and cams for hopefuly similar output to an 800 at less cost.
I know some will hate me for saying this but if you have put 40k on your bike sence 2005 you may be happier staying with a wet clutch motor.  The dry cluch sound is cool but the wet is a little more street friendly.
What ever direction you deside to go good luck with the build

I'm not sure if they are all the same.  I believe the pins are different on some as well as the ability to control a stepper motor for idle and warm up.

That's what I was afraid of, that darn lil "choke" handle...  Hmmf.. Lot's to ponder, lots to ponder.

1000m has a fast idle lever just like a 620.  you'll need the motor, inlet manifolds, exhaust headers and ecu.  everything else is the same.

altho the noise of a dry clutch can shit me to tears, a wet clutch slipping with a hotted up motor is less fun.  my 750 now has a very heavy clutch to stop it slipping.  of course fitting a new pack instead of jamming up s/h ones with extra plates because i'm a tight arse may have something to do with that.  but the non aptc wet clutches are as heavy as any dry.

the 1000 motors have a nice wide ratio gearbox too, as do 900ssie - it's a good thing.  900mie motors have the close ratio.

What's this 1000m motor you speak of??

If anyone has any hot tips on 1000DS engines for sale I'm all earsss, people crash these things every-day and swap em out for people like meeee!

I'm still eyeing that engine for sale in Torrance, it's just a matter of getting everything I need for it..
