Title: UPDATE...900ss Project (PIC HEAVY)
Post by: vampireduc on August 12, 2008, 02:23:59 PM
Here we go it has been a long time coming.  This is one of my bigger steps needing to get finished.  Here is a quick run down to catch everyone up.

This is my 01 900ss, 5200 miles, that was dropped (by the previous owner).  He tried to repair it, became bored with the project, let it sit for a year.  Then I showed up offer him $2000 for it, he took it and I wheeled it off.  I'm going to 'streetfighter', 'monster', superlight the SS whatever you want to call it.  Here's the progress.  Oh...did I mention that it was a schoolbus yellow frame, and metalic maroon fairings.

The day I picked it up...

all tucked in for bed...assembly party to come soon!

More work to come! will post up as progress continues.  Right now I'm just trying to get her ridable again.  I don't have the expendable fortune to do what I want right away.  Ohlins complete set-up, Not stock clip-ons, 749/999 headlight setup, motogadets instrument panel, 02+ SS swing arm (maybe SSS), Corbin saddle, radical tail chop to monoposto, center-up exhaust or quad-e type.  Anyone that has these pieces hollar at me.  There is a lot more than just this to do.

I still need- (if anyone has these for sale)
-Left Clip-On and handlebar.
-Chain and front Sproket 14T
-Monster headlight (any mounting hardware also)
-Stock Adj Clutch Lever

I bow my head! How have you gotten the guts to do all this? I mean, for example, how to reconnect wires/ find the right bolts and understanding how it all works? Are you a professional? (If not, why not?)

Title: Re: UPDATE...900ss Project (PIC HEAVY)
Post by: vampireduc on August 12, 2008, 03:38:41 PM
thank you...no, not a professional, just learning as I go.  As for the wires...a lot of painters tape and sharpie labeling (in my own language) because I don't know what everything is.

I actually get made fun of at work (Army helicopter pilot) that I just want to build bikes after the army...I don't need to fly.

Title: Re: UPDATE...900ss Project (PIC HEAVY)
Post by: vampireduc on August 13, 2008, 07:53:43 AM
Paint is polyeurothaine with a  2 part epoxy clear.

Forks are painted...same, I'm hoping that teflon tape or something similar will aid in getting them into the triples with as few nicks as possible. (any adivce other than taking it easy, I'm open to)

And the ARMY blanket is mine!  Bought and paid for with 12 years so far...the final 8 shouldn't be to bad.   Maybe I'll get more than a blanket out of it.

Title: Re: UPDATE...900ss Project (PIC HEAVY)
Post by: Duck-Stew on August 15, 2008, 11:15:14 PM
You'll scuff the hell out of the paint on the forks no matter how you do it.

the only way to color the fork tubes is to disassemble them and have the tubes hard anodized a different color.

but.....since you've already painted them...  Good luck.

Post by: DrDesmo on August 16, 2008, 04:20:20 AM
One thing to try re: the forks is taking a few clothespins, disassemble them so it's just the two pieces of wood, and wedge them into the triples to spread the openings up a bit.  Looking schweet  [thumbsup]

Adam

I have nothing but time....I'll try the clothes pins...I'll try taking my time, I have touch up paint to add the "hey look at my mess" idea.

Thanks guys.

Hey, thinking of which, I put my frame back on the engine yesterday, tightened everything up and there is vertical play in the mounting.  Is this normal?  I stopped there before I mounted the swingarm, rear shock, and triples.  Will that play go away when I get everything mounted and off the engine stand?

Title: Re: UPDATE...900ss Project (PIC HEAVY)
Post by: truckinduc on August 16, 2008, 09:02:29 AM
mine has a little play too. i think its normal untill you tighten it down. But then i drilled out my rear mount from 10mm to 12mm cause i kept snapping bolts. Less play now

Title: Re: UPDATE...900ss Project (PIC HEAVY)
Post by: vampireduc on August 16, 2008, 05:42:10 PM
my frame bolts are tightened down.  or are you talking all the suspension and etc.?

Title: Re: UPDATE...900ss Project (PIC HEAVY)
Post by: truckinduc on August 16, 2008, 10:27:37 PM
ok i didnt see that you had tightened everything down. Have you torqued everything to spec? Im talking frame only, no suspension hooked up. When i would get my bolts snug there would be a tad of verticle play. but it disappeared as i torqued, of course from the friction. I would check the holes for out of round. The monster rear motor mount bolts tended to loosen over time. That could cause the engine case or frame holes to become out of round. Good luck.

Outstanding work!!  Good on you for taking it on, and for your family for pitching in too!

Out of curiosity, where are you posted?  Let me know if you ever get assigned to the aviation regiment here at Wheeler (on Oahu).  We are always looking for another Ducati to go riding with.  ;)

Any updates?

also, after re-reading your initial posting you mention a possibility of an SSS on the bike.  Well, I have (somewhere) a pic of an S2R swingarm (modified to use the stock lower SS shock mount) bolted to an '00 SS750.  I'll see if I can dig that out sometime in the next week.  [popcorn]

I have the tank back.  I'm currently TDY for 6 months, so I will not be able to do ANY work to it unitl July-ish.  I should make a buck or few so I should be able to finish it once I get back.  So...hopefully I'll have a living breathing Supermonster?...monsterSS?...by fall.

Ok...  I'm not the quickest here...  But, here's the shots of an S2R swinger on a 2000 SS750i.e. I mocked up in 2006 for a project that fizzled.

The rear wheel is off of a '99 996 btw...  If the S2R swingarm was about 1" shorter, I think it would flow with the lines of the SS better, but it's still not bad.  The rear suspension wasn't connected in the photos, there's a 7/8" steel rod holding the bike up.

I have the capacity to add an SS rear shock mount to the top tube of the S*R swingarm if someone's interested in this mod BTW...  [bacon]

I built one back in '99 on a '95 Supersport.  Later in 2003/4 did a lot of artwork concepts of SBK swingarms on the newer Supersport. Never figured out why Ducati never offered this setup (probably cost) -- it's just way too cool looking...

Yeah...  The lines of the S2R swingarm really flow with the 'swoopiness' of the 99&up SS fairings...

Title: Re: UPDATE...900ss Project (PIC HEAVY)
Post by: vampireduc on July 10, 2009, 10:55:53 AM
bars (clipons...considered replacing the upper triple and going with a monster setup), mirrors (bar end), and one Right hand OEM brake lever

chain/ sprocket

key switch...and assoc shenanigans

Someone that can weld.  I want to move my ignition coils under the seat and need a bracket manufactured.

and a still want a monster head light/ gauge set up

this is all I can think of needed to make it road worthy, outside of the oil change.  I want it on the road...I'll get nutty with it later.  I need a riding bike while I have a project, I didn't think that part out so well.

the transfer has begun!  The 900ss will ridable soon. Still looking for headlights that will be "streetfighterish"

With the 750 I also got and extra tank, shark skin racing fairings, and brand new flush mount turn signals (not installed before he wrecked the bike)
I don't believe that the 750's frame is salvageable...so looking for someone that can weld and has frame experience and go chopper on it like the duccutters "Jupiter"

Hey VampireDuc,

I just picked up a 99 900SS yesterday from some hillbillies dirt farm in some shithole town of South Carolina with intentions of a neat little Road/Track custom project.

Anyways I figure we may be able to help each other out, as I need a few parts, and your parts bike may be able to supply them:

Headlight fairing, complete (scratches ok, no cracks though please).
Right side clip on bar.
Exhaust system or cans (oem or aftermarket).

Let me know what you may have, and I can provide cash or parts to help your project.

Thank you,
Randy

last log-in ...Aug of 2009!!!  I can't believe that I have been that busy!  I have such an ache to get this bike up and running, but am fighting issues needing new tires, chain, sproket, and the wiring is kicking my butt.  Long Story short, starting a new job and jumping back and forth between home and the desert those poor bikes have done nothing but sit.

BellissiMoto...I have Cans, I have a headlight fairing (i think it may be cracked...I haven't seen it in a while), headlight, DO NOT have the clip on- that was one of the pieces I stole from my parts bike.  I do have Sharkskin Racing Fairings if you are interested.

Good to finally find my way back to the list.  I hope when I get home in a month or so, I can put in some real hours on the moto!

Bump - Is it still a project, VampireDuc?

This build is being featured in the BikeBuilds.net directory here:
We’re currently displaying only a reduced-size photo (similar to what you’d find in Google Images). We'd like to ask for your permission to publish the original full-size image with your build listing.

If anyone would like to have a build of their own listed, just send me a message with a link to the build thread and we’ll take care of the rest.
