Title: Thinking about trading in my monster for a Scrambler
Post by: nheaney696 on July 21, 2015, 02:37:20 PM
Hello All!
I have owned my 2009 Monster 696 for 6 years. I have loved her so much- but I think I have found another....while at Laguna Seca this weekend, I sat on the Scrambler. I was smitten. I originally rode a 96 1200 Sportster but sold it due to how dang heavy that thing was. Now- the Scrambler reminds me of the riding position I miss. Any ways- I'm wondering wether I should sell my monster or trade her in? She has 20K miles, has been serviced regularly (all documentation on hand) I just replaced the battery, tires, brakes and chain within this year. Pretty much stock (except had to get rid of those awful mirrors, frame sliders, fender eliminator) Any thoughts?

Trading it in is easiest, but you can get a bit more coin selling it yourself.

I do not have room for three motorcycles. My husband has a 796. He wants me to keep my monster too. But to be honest- it's not fiscally responsible of me. And BTW we live in an apartment- so no garage!

Like kopf says you'll get more for itin a private sale, but it will take longer and it will be more of a hassle.

Are you in a hurry?

Have you had a chance for a test ride, yet?  If you're on the fence between one or the other, a test ride should help make up your mind.

Personally, I'd sell privately. It's never been much time or hassle for me and I'd rather have the extra cash in my pocket than give it to the dealer.

Just my two cents.   [thumbsup]

Well guys I've sold the monster S4Rt and the scrambler FT is on order... :o

After a vacation in Italy this June with the wife riding pillion I decided that we needed a bike that was alittle less powerful for us two olde farts to potter about on so on coming home we took the stores demo out for a day and that was it, the monster went up for sale and sold within 24 hours.

The streetfighter is a keeper which I ride solo and I've got a lot of idea's for modding the scrambler.

Yeah, that makes me a bit sad. Having a S4Rt and a Streefighter is a bit of an overkill, but I know which one I would pick.

Have you had a chance for a test ride, yet?  If you're on the fence between one or the other, a test ride should help make up your mind.

Not sure how many Scramblers are out there that don't already have a name to them, so no test rides. I've been to a few dealers and as soon as they come off the truck, they ride off.

We have a demo scrambler at both stores which are in great demand and sales are through the roof.

Carlos which one would you keep... ???

Raux the tricolore went a couple of years ago and was replaced by the S4rt a model which I'd always wanted as a project for stuff that I'd had in mind but didn't want to try on the tricolore.

Geoff... [coffee]

BTW....as long as Nate will have me I'll still be around... ;) ;)

Went to my local dealer and basically heard a lot of things I didn't want to hear. Like they are getting their last Scrambler Full Throttle in the next ten days that they're getting for this "model year"  the LAST thing I wanted was to be rushed. so I guess as much as i want a Scramble FT- good things come to those who will wait. And their ballpark trade in value hurt my heart. I'll try my hand at selling my bike locally.

Having owned a 696 and also looking over a scrambler at Laguna also, I think I would pass on another very low spec bike. I think the scrambler will be the next 696 with many good low mile bikes for sale in the future.

Geoff, I would keep the S4Rt. I love the gray and red color combo, plus the sitting position on the Streefighter is far less comfortable.

+1 If you truly want to be patient, I would wait for the first batch of Scramblers to be resold. It's a low spec bike and people will eventually move up.

... or mod the hell out of it with expensive bling and turn it into something special.  I can certainly see the appeal.

Even if people mod the hell out of it, many will sell them and as we all know, mods don't add sales value.

Why not modify the 696 into a scrambler?

Looking over the bike but not yet riding one, it seems like an even lower price point bike than the 696, but very similar parts. From what I have read the scrambler is not a money maker like the 696. If Ducati is using the same strategy as the 696, they will use the low priced bike to get new customers to the brand, fully sucked in like crack heads, and release a higher spec bike later to suck more money out of customers like they did to me! 😲

Until the husband wants a Panigale or Streetfighter. Then I'll sell her to a real person that wants to love her like I do. ;D

Got to take pictures tomorrow. Just got it from the dealer today. Just got a little more paranoid by reading the Scrambler owners manual. Seriously-does no one have common sense anymore? Some of these warnings in the booklet are ridiculous. :P

Beware of the wandering horse that he shall not take fright as you pass him.
Do not explode the exhaust box at him.

Give big space to the festive dog that makes sport in roadway.
Avoid entanglement of dog with wheel spokes.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon!
Press the brake foot as you roll around the corners, and save the collapse and tie up.

Sweet! Congrats. I test rode a full throttle for an hour this past Tuesday. Liked it but really loved the icon I rode after with termi pipe (no baffle)! Icon felt more comfy. I didn't feel comfortable on the full throttle as far as seat positioning and handle bars. Plus I'm a sucker for Ducati red! My dilemna right now is whether to keep my 2011 Monster 796 or get the scrambler. Decisions. Wish I could keep both but that's not realistic for me. I'd rather sell monster on my own since dealer is only offering $5k for bike. Enjoy your new Scrambler!!

Sounds like the manual of my old '92 Superlight. ;D

What's great is there are enough variations on the model allowing for individual fit, giving a very broad appeal. They're on a winner alright. The posts here prove it. I think now is the time to buy a small used Monster.

How you making out with it?

My wife and I stopped by a dealer the other week to get her maintenance light reset on the 696 and she spent a good amount of time checking out the Scrambler.

We're starting to consider maybe adding one to the garage as her second bike, maybe her "touring" bike. I see that Hepco and Becker maybe C-Bow bag mounts and a topcase rack for it.

Anything we should know about the Scrambler?

Compare it to your Monster?

Well..... Riding position definitely more comfy. I'm being reaaaallly good and not bringing the rpms above 5.....pesky 600 mile break in period. My throttle is a teeny bit grabby-but around town- super responsive and just a blast to be on! My 696 still kicks ass though- all of the trips my husband and I have taken up to Santa Cruz and San Jose- keeps making me put off trying to sell her and justify having 3 motorcycles. I definitely see the touring potential for the Scrambler-  :)

Thanks for the report.

How about handling? How about powerband? Brakes?

I'm assuming it's about as nimble, at least as powerful, and still brakes very well?

I should say that Jenn has never hesitated to tour on the 696. She can strap a bag to the back and do a few 300+ mile days. Which is amazing to me on the stock seat, but hey, she weighs 100# less than me.

Kev, only guessing because I still haven't ridden one: Scrambler has a 796 engine detuned ~ 10 BHP but geared down to compensate, so it ought to feel much more torquey than a 696 (which is already geared lower than an M796.

On paper should have enough brakes because the front is 1/2 a SBK brake. Dual sport tire and 18" rather than 17". Might feel almost as nimble as the bar might have more leverage?

Note that the fork is a 41mm, not a 43mm. She'll have to ride it. Throttle will probably improve with break-in but will take 1,500+ miles. My M796 did. Scrambler only has one throttle body vs two on the M796, part of the detuning possibly.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking on paper at least (and though I hadn't noticed the fork diameter differences, I doubt it matters much at this size/weight bike - hell my nearly 600# Sportster is wearing 39mm forks).

But here are some specs (mostly from MCN, but I don't have their Scrambler test handy for the braking spec so that one is from CW which might be hard to compare to the other two from MCN, but it looks realistic):

M696 vs. Scrambler vs. M796

Wet Weight: 408# / 410# / 415#

RWHP: 67 / 70 / 76

Torque: 44 / 47 / 51

1/4 mile: 12.21 / 11.91* / 11.97

Braking 60-0: 119.5' / 123' / 117.4'

* I think you might be right on the gearing, and that probably explains the standing 1/4 mile too.

Better riding out here in CA.  Lane splitting is fun!
I miss my rides back in AZ though..especially in Northern part of the state, Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon and Jerome.

I do miss riding Oak Creek Canyon- also Flagstaff along Lake Mary. I've been wanting to take the Santa Cruz mountains on my vacation in January.  ;D
