Title: 696 Speedo Not working
Post by: kuzemko on July 03, 2013, 07:24:53 AM
So I googled a bit, but either my skills aren't up to par or nothing was posted, but...

I did a tail tuck and cleaned up the rear of the bike. I used all the stock wiring, and didn't cut/splice into anything. Only non-stock light used is the one for the license plate. After I installed it, it rained a bit, and today on my way to work, I noticed that my speedo isn't working. The rest of the info on the dash works/tracks fine, but my speed is stuck at 0 mph. Did I miss anything during the installation? Would the undertail kit have anything to do with it? (not sure how speed is tracked) Anybody else have similar issue or any idea where I can check first?

Thanks for the help!

Nevermind! On the ride home from work, it worked just fine. I'm going to blame a little of it on PFM and most of it on the rain/humidity making the electronics not happy. After sitting in the heat while I was inside, it may have dried out... Or it was PFM. Any other thoughts?

Okay it's still happening intermittently. Any ideas why the speedo would just not work?

Along with the speedo, the mileage isn't tracking. Overall or the trip. Ugh. I'll see if I can find where the sensor tracks and check it. Not sure what else to do.

the speedo and mileage is picked up by the sensor on your brake mount.
follow that sensor and see if the connector is loose.

I see the sensor on the brakes, but I lose the cable behind my right rearset. The sensor itself seems fine. Solidly mounted still. Nothin wrong with the wiring I can see. Seems like an odd thing to stop working...

I think i've read of the sensors going bad

Loosen off the tail tidy or remove and see if you pinched the wire when you did the install. I can check on mine tomorrow when I get home for the routing of the cable.

btw which tail tidy?

I removed, inspected the wiring and cleaned up the routing of the cables. Used a few more zip-ties and some electrical tape to kind of bundle up and clean up the cabling. Everything looked fine with nothing exposed and good connections. All wiring is stock, didn't need to splice into anything for the install.

Evotech. Found on fleabay, worked like a champ.

Side question: Would the tail section lighting have anything to do with the sensor for the speedo/mileage? I teach basic electronics for the navy and I don't see how these few wires in the harness would have anything to do with the sensor. Then again I don't know anything about the ECU programming.

Just realized my question sounded pretentious and kind of like an asshole. Not meant that way at all, just meant that I'm not a complete electronics noob. I AM however, a Monster Maintenance noob.

well for example.
when i put the Competition Werks tail tidy I blew the main fuse due to poor grounding and wiring routing.
it didn't look that way when i buttoned it up.
i replaced the fuse, took off the tail and returned it (really poor quality build)

have you checked all your fuses?

Didn't check any fuses, but the speedo has worked since the tail tidy. I was guessing loose connection somewhere, just need to find the non-sensor end of that wire. I'll check fuses in the morning to be sure though.

Fuses good, cabling is good, but new indications today tell me it's the sensor itself and not a connection. If the connection was loose, it would work intermittently. Instead when I started it today, while idling, the speed went from 0 to 67 to 21 to a few other numbers, then back to 0. As I drove off it changed a couple times and then back to 0. The sensor is bad... I just wish it was something easier/cheaper. Hopefully I can find them online for not too much. Ugh...

find a friend and double check before buying

I seem to recall reading over and over about failures in the speedo cluster after it got wet.  Didn't this problem start after riding in the rain?

Was the cure to dry it out with a hair dryer?

Good idea. If I could find another 696 around here who wouldn't mind me swapping parts long enough to test, I would. I'll see who is around on the local forum. I would hate to spend $185 on something that didn't fix it.

It's been baking hot here the last week or so in CT. Humid also though. Next chance I get, I'll see about removing the sensor and checking it all out more thoroughly. Hair dryer if it looks like that may help. Just seems weird that it lasted just fine in Seattle for a year with rain-riding and now out here it gives me a hard time after 1-2 days of rain. Who knows.

Tried everything but swapping it. No change.

2 days ago I unbolted it to show someone else what it looked like and put it back. Now it works. I give up. Hahaha
