@mattc7, Some details are still up in the air, but I can tell you that the look will be murdered out with lots of black, there will be loads of weight savings and we may even take a peak into the motor... Stay tuned.

Remove the upper triple clamp, file down any cast lines and make it the same color as the bottom clamp.   ;D

Since you're down that far, take the frames, triples and swingarm, smooth them and paint or powdercoat them all to match.

And you will definitely need some pod filters and a custom bracket to spice up the engine... Get rid of that giant plastic air box  ;D

where you at?

perhaps we can either suggest friends we know as well, etc.

motor work is largely budget dependent. when budget is an issue, pick lightweight wheels first, because its like upgrading your brakes and motor too.

some thoughts

Ti axles
mag side cases
ti bolts everywhere?
need to wait for motorcreations carbon fiber replacement tail, gets rid of that metal pan on the tail piece.
mono seat in carbon fiber
carbon fiber tank panels
going to pod filters?
BST rims

you should be hitting pretty low in the 300s for weight

Thanks for the suggestions. More than likely going to do the Mag cases. Thinking of doing the Mono Seat with custom paint... Been investigating velocity stacks / Pod filters. Probably going to go with forged mag on the wheels.

I haven’t seen anything about the motocreations tail... Where can I get more info on that?

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike
Post by: Raux on March 13, 2011, 11:04:20 PM
the reason i said the pod filters is the airbox isn't light.
one of my goals is to get a friend to work up a larger more funtional CF airbox

for the motocreations tail piece, you'll have to  look at their facebook site for sneakpeak.

tons more ways to lighten the bike.
lighter brake rotors
are you using a 525 or 520 chain?
you could drop a lot with a custom TI exhaust system

i like the way you are going though. light is right.

Both are up for sale. You can see the wheels here: http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=47016.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=47016.0)

I do have someone that is serious about buying both, but if it falls through and you are interested, I can sell everything together for $1400. Keep in mind that this is just the wheels and swingarm. Does not include the hub assembly and other components.

A little Ducati Performance goodness. I went with the DP Magnesium Side Case, DP pressure plate and DP CF clutch cover. You can also see the Speedymoto belt cover in this shot. "Kinetic Art" would be a good way to describe this side of the bike.

Next up – DP Magnesium Side Case for the alternator side of the bike.

Exhaust looks great!   I know AMS did that for a bunch of Hypermotards and I saw one in there the other day - one of the evo SP's, and Jordan was putting on a black-ceramic and black pc'd end cap Termi 2-1 system on it. Super good looking on that bike.

i love black ohlins even more than the gold - its distinct, much like the red topshelf marzocchi's.   gold comes on the gjb's superbike forks now, so its fresh to see them in black (or red or blue).

Very cool - I think the bottom triples are "more" than just bling and was confused that the rear end was so substantially improved but the front end left 'half-done' - great to see it will be done too!

This one is not titanium-colored, the spring is actually made of titanium rather than steel.  Saves about 4-4.5lbs of weight over the normal OEM or Ohlins springs.

Nice bike so far. So you're the new DNA CEO! Or are you really Steve Jobs? Glad to see the new boss is a real bike man! Congratulations on being Warren Buffet too. I thought buying other people was the only hobby the 1% indulged in but I was wrong!

But.....Evo slave. ISR or Berenger masters FTW. Braketech CMCs or Sicom rotors. Ti nutz & boltz EVERYWHERE. Ti front axle. NCR Ti rear ride height adjuster. Ti rear shock spring. SPROING! I mean really give it the j v treatment. Still would have rather seen the new BST carbon swingarm/triple clamps/wheels on the bike, then you truly would have ultimate Monster bragging rights. I don't trust magnesium, and it's heavier and cheaper than carbon. But hey. Did I mention BST carbon? I mean throw the whole vault at this thing man! You can afford it! Go Go Go!

In other news kopfjaeger's Monster is my favorite motorcycle of all time.

For a bike that doesn't use a height adjuster, or have adjustable ride height, this is the only thing I find in your post to be overkill

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike
Post by: junior varsity on April 02, 2011, 05:35:05 PM
what bike do you have that doesn't have a ride height adjuster?  some don't come from the factory with an adjustable one, but it is adjustable on every model - though sometimes it requires replacing the rod or partially disassembling the suspension linkages.

on the 94-01 Monsters, based on the 851-888 frame, you remove the pins holding the swingarm and hoop's ball-ends together, and wind them in or out equally to raise or lower the height. The race model 851/888 had an eccentric adjustment on the top shock mount to do a similar adjustment, with much faster adjustments.

the 02+ Monsters use a rod-linkage setup like the 748-916-996-998 - if your rod is non-adjustable, you just swap it with an adjustable one and BAM ride-height adjustments. The non-adj rod was equipped to cut costs so there was more price-discrimination across the model lines.

The 1100 and 696 are NOT height adjustable.  The closest manner of changing ride height is to machine a new clevis (or try to add a spacer, which I am looking into -- just have to hang the subframe off the ceiling first, or get a motor stand, so that I can see how much room there is to add.  1/8" or so more in the back would be great).

The 696 has a different attachment bracket than the 1100, this provides the height difference, and is the cheapest way to raise the rear on the 696.  If you have an 1100 already, it's at the max ride height (unless you crank up preload, but that's just silly to do for ride height, as it will kill quality, and proper suspension setup).

They use the direct shock, rather than linkage

ah, i have forgotten this.   i stand corrected, but there are other solutions still.

On the non-progressive models or whatever you call the direct-shock-action, you'd have to use a shock with adjustable ride height for such changes.  Penske and Ohlins can manufacture shocks like this, and I'm sure other suspension manufacturers can as well.   I know Ohlins is willing to do both one-offs and 'regular customs' (such as a specially made shorter shock, with specific valving and spring, to lower the 696, since even a DP Low Seat doesn't bring it down all that much).  And every Penske is a 'one-off' - they are all built to order, not preassembled - so it could be done there as well.   That'd be part of my course-of-investigation in how to get-it-done.

Part two of investigating this for me would be to review history: the Supersports were also direct-action, and people tracked the hell out of these things. I'm sure somebody at some point came up with a solution since a change in ride height makes significant changes to how the bike will steer by changing both the wheel base, the position of the rider, the weight bias, and the angle of the forks.

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike
Post by: Raux on April 03, 2011, 01:15:31 PM
the 696 is pretty low stock when it comes to ground and peg clearance
better to lower the 696 with seat changes or custom seat work

the 696 with 1100 shock mount is great IMO
the 1100 must be at a good height too, but going more???

I think you would be at the limit of the chain angle unless you changed sprockets for larger ones to avoid the chain eating the top of the swingarm. This is one reason I went back to the 15t instead of 14 t in the front.. i know not much, but still enough for me to worry.

if you are just trying to adjust geometry, lower the front of the 1100 would do the same as raising the rear
for actual seat height.. go with the DP Comfort or a custom seat to add some mm's

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike
Post by: junior varsity on April 03, 2011, 01:18:42 PM
lowering the front does not change the wheel base as much from my experience.  i'm sure its different depending on how ride-height is adjusted, but that's been my tape-measure findings.

That does look really bad ass.

If the bottom rearset bolts that go into the sump are the same as the ones from the older generation Monsters - heavy zinc-steel shouldered M10 bolts, quickly navigate to Pro-Bolt USA and go to Titanium-->Motorcycle Special Parts --> Ducati Clearance and grab up some shouldered titanium bolts to save big weight.

The alternative is, in the event the correct sizes are not there, or not in the color you are looking for (since they do anodize their titanium, but if its ano'd purple or blue or gold and you just want clear and its already sold out) another great alternative is to contact TPO Parts for the M10-sized Shoulder Bolt aluminum "sleeves" - you use the sleeve insert made from aluminum with a normal steel or titanium socket head bolt, rather than a bigger, heavier shouldered steel bolt to accomplish the same task.   Big weight savings if you do the Ti bolts with Aluminum Sleeves for those M10 bolts. And the M10 bolts are threaded M10x1.5 - not M10x1.25 (that was the engine bolt threading - at least it was for the engine bolts back in the day that threaded into the RH side of the frame...) - you don't want to end up with the wrong thread pitch bolts, and waiting longer on the right ones to arrive.

If those lower rearset mount bolts are actually quite different, than you can ignore what I have just blabbered on and on about, but if you did look into an alternative, a pretty big weight savings could be had. Certainly more than replacing the mudguard bolts with ti or alu (since they are so small to begin with).

DucatiTorrey _ Yes, it’s the integrated smoked Tail light from Competition Werks.

@lazylightnin717 _ Yes, heavily black with gold accents throughout. Paint will be very Darmah inspired.

@j v _ Good call, I will check into it. Eventually, I will probably give the entire bike the Titanium Bold treatment.

Nice. You probably have read this or knew this from before, but you want to double check with the vendor that the bolts' threads are rolled and the heads are forged. If they are neither, demand to pay less since its not as nice as the bolts that have both. The recommended torque values for the titanium bolts is going to be less than what the manual specifies for the steel fasteners, but typically not by much. You *must* use antiseize.  I recomend starting with the big bolts first - axle nuts (can be alu or ti), shock pivot bolts, engine crankcase halves thru-bolts (M8x75 or so bolts - except for the red bolt! that's a special drilled bolt, don't you go and replace that with anything but a special drilled bolt!), the big rearset hanger bolts, caliper mount bolts and on 2-piece calipers - the pinch bolts, axle and triple clamp pinch bolts, and a big one - all the M8 rotor mount bolts!

Baller Bolts has low-head torx M8 bolts for the brake rotor bolts that are the correct head diameter to fit into the rotor carriers that have recessed mount hole 'pockets'. Its like the old school Ducati Performance Titanium brake kits that included 4 ti caliper mount bolts and 12 Ti socket cap low-head rotor bolts, except the Baller Bolts offer them with the Torx style so you are less likely to 'torque-out' and strip the head when installing than with the socket-head style bolts. TPO, similarly, has the button-head style that is on the new era bikes - so cosmetically the profile of the heads of the rotor bolts would be the same.

Speaking of the awesome folks down at TPO, I sent them a spare SS/ST/SC/MR/851/888 swingarm pivot awhile back (unfortunately, it is not the same as the 1100's) for them to take measurements of for cloning out of Titanium so there will be a commercially available replacement for the steel ones - since all that exists out there that I can readily find for direct purchase (rather than commissioning a one-off custom) is the swingarm pivots for the 748-996-998 and 848-1098-1198. TPO makes really bad ass lightweight 7068 front axles - I've got one on my 998-forked Monster, and its been a hoot for the last thousand or so miles. As far as longevity concerns: Its about half the price of a Ti front axle, lighter, and Shift-Tech has had one on their SF project for around/over 7,000mi according to a post on the .MS boards. So no worries there.

Likewise, if you want to get real real real real real real nuts, you can get a SSS rear axle in Ti. Its a big piece though, so expect really really really big dollars involved.  NCR used to make one for the 748-996, so I'm sure its possible to get one done up for the M796/1100 and Hypermotards.

the other thing i thought of, and perhaps I missed it - are you using the OEM rear hub/eccentric still? I am not sure whether RAM provides a magnesium eccentric hub with their swingarms or if it takes a proprietary unit, but if yours is still the OEM style, perhaps locating a Magnesium one to replace that is possible. I don't own an M1100 currently, so I've done less looking around at what is out there - quite obvious in my forgetting the suspension setup earlier.. oops - but perhaps there's something out there from Marvic/Marchesini/Febur or direct from RAM.   I've got the 'oem-sized' Febur mag eccentric for my 2v 748 project - the weight savings is noticeable and its unsprung weight at the very end of a lever - so math-wise, the inertia and such make for better traction with weight removed out there.

RAM swingarms are deisgned to use stock hubs, but they DO make mag eccentric hubs too.

same as OEM dimensionally, but stupid light

nice! that would be very much worthwhile. On the "2v-SBK" project, I've got an OEM 748-916 hub, and later found a special oem-sized "billet" 748-916 hub - only has 2 teeth to adjust chain tension on it - very odd piece, and then I later found the OEM-sized mag eccentrics. They kind of go in order of lightness, heaviest-to-lightest, in the order I found them too.

I just checked RAM, after posting off memory, and I only see a listing for the 1098 hub.
I know I've seen a hub for the 848 (but don't see it from RAM - same as m1100?).

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike

i love it. But is it for New Monsters only? If so, thats not 'INclusive' as in "being included in the ducati family/community" but rather "EXclusive" meaning 'all you pre-existing monster owners are excluded from the fun because you haven't bought a new [monster] bike recently'. and that doesn't give people warm-n-fuzzies.

Categories should be made

1.Dual sided swingarm models
2.S2r
3.New Models
4.More custom items, aka motorswaps, and other changes that redefine the concept rather than accenting it. (The 696 - 996motor and desmodevil types here)

Makes everyone involved and gets rid of model biases

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike
Post by: junior varsity on April 05, 2011, 01:36:30 PM
You cannot create a distinction between the DSS and S*R Models. That is not a fair method of categorization because:

The S4, a DSS, has a 4v motor in it. The S4R and S4Rt/S models also are 4V, but are SSS.
The S2R 800 and 1000 models are 2v powerplants with a SSS, while the M800 and M1000 - sharing the same motor as the S2R versions, but coming out of the factory just a bit earlier, are DSS.

Do you divide by frame derivation? 2001 and older era, excluding the S4 on the east corner, and 2002 and newer up to 2007, and including the S4 on the west corner, 696/796/1100 in the north corner, and category-defying go in the south corner?

The problem is exacerbated because there are aftermarket kits to convert your DSS Monster into a 916-748-996-998 era swingarmed SSS-model. (Kit also available for old school Supersports too, mind you).   So if I show up with a 1995, 851-888 frame based Monster sporting a 916 era single-sided swingarm and wheel, do I compete with the other DSS models, or the subset of pre-2002 DSS models, or the 2V SSS / S2R model subset, or against the S4R's also, engine categorization be damned?

The answer should be "yes":  Make it "open-class" - or at least award over-all awards regardless of category if there must also be subdivided awards. A "let the people speak" kind of voting. If a crazy custom wins, great research/data gathering for Ducati. If more of type X Monster wins than type Y Monster, well - great research/data gathering for Ducati!  Win/Win.

i would think having it brushed would be even sexier...  imagine that bike with the full alum treatment in the orig thread, but cleaned up and all the aluminum brushed to follow the curves of the tank/bike as a extra accent...  would complete the whole look imo.  polished might be a bit too blingy for my tastes...

i'm not sure i see that really 'flowing' with the theme.

then again, if it could be clear-coated with tint in the clear to closely match the ram swingarm, that might be pretty nuts.

Imagine this with black instead of red

oh, i didnt mean for arrick's bike, i meant that orig bike in jvax's thread.  arrick's would def need something else.

and really... if you're going to go as far as arrick has gone, i would just go ahead and gold plate the tank if he went aluminum.  and then do a darmah inspired look on it after in black.  also, gold plating it would def take care of any issues with corrosion.  that being said... gold plating aluminum is a bit more annoying... but hey, if you're going to go this far, go all the way  haha

The family car is easier IMO.

Arrick...if you sand and repaint, try not to sand through the clear. The clear can lift from fresh color.

If you can get away with it, you can sand the clear with 800 wet and just re-clear.

On a performance note, not sure if I have missed it:

Did you do the DP or NCR cams for the 1100?
And kind of directly related: Lightweight timing rollers kit? (The 4-pulley kit for layshaft pulleys and cam pulleys)

And kind of related because its lighter and spinning: the DP lightweight flywheel?

An 1100 motard with that stuff is bad ass.

You don't have to be rich to have something like this, I mean without looking to hard into it, I'd say this entire project could be done for around $30,000, which is about the same as a mid level Toyota, and I know which one I would rather have.

In fact, when all is said and done, my Monster will have less than $20,000 into it, initial bike purchase, carbon wheels/rotors, etc... all included.

if you put it that way, but its still a luxary item. If i had $20k i wouldnt spend it on a bike. Im not financially stable enough to drop it on toys. Id keep keep it for a rainy day/invest it in something i need. etc.

But if you DID, yea i picture my dream bike would only cost like 25k even with bling bling parts.

But isnt that how much a bridge from new york to italy cost anyway? :P

Meh,  clearly the OP can afford the indulgence  [thumbsup].  And I'm enjoying watching this well bankrolled collection of exclusive, high-cost components assemble itself into what promises to be an incredible sight.  Looking forward to seeing what that fully ceramic coated exhaust looks like against the finished article.

Special thanks to Nathan at DucShop for his help. As these were made for the Hyper, there was no guarantee that they would work with the M1100, but so far everything looks to be perfect. Will work out fueling once the bike is all back together and I can get to a Dyno.

the stepper motor hose is wider than the 08/09 hyper stepper hose.  Makes for a slight change, but otherwise fits great.  I just finished throwing some on this morning too

Yeah, you could have a mid level Toyota but most people who would buy a Toyota aren't paying for it in full. I'd say, after reading both this thread and your S4Rt thread, that you guys are pretty neck and neck when it comes to the status of your builds. The difference is, this guy has bought and paid off his new Toyota in one month.

On top of that your S4Rt can be had for what, around 10k? I think that's around 5k less than a new 1100s?

I'm not trying to make enemies, what you both are doing is very impressive. I wish I was in the position to do half of what you guys already have.

Keep up the good work and I can't wait till both of these projects are done, that way i have some naughty pics to look at when the GF isn't home!!

I assume the stacks require a PCV as well for fueling?  If so, gonna go with auto-tuning?  Man I wish you could document all the mods you've done to this and how to do them, it would be an awesome resource for the rest of us!  Great work!

@Amlethae, I will be going with a PC V, but after speaking with Dynojet, it is apparent that the Autotune is not a good option for this particular application.

I've never really been into the auto-tune concept, but what was their reasoning?

I don't think anyone in California is using Rexxer software yet, but Redline in VA might be able to work with you on making a custom map and flashing it (although shipping the ecu a few times has reprecussions).

A PCV with a good dual cylinder tune sounds like your best option

Ungeheuer and I had our ECU's flashed to remove the closed loop portion of the fuel map and to remove the O2 sensors. Ung is currently running a PCV with dual autotune using the stock O2 bungs.

I have to ask, though - what's the story on those high-rise clipons?  If you want the bars up that high, why not go with risers & handlebars rather than clipons?

Well yeah, that would suck as a half-arsed non-option  [roll].

The advice coming out of DynoJet Central seems to be a little disappointingly inadequate recently.  Business must be so good that they dont want to sell any more Dual Autotune systems  [bang].  In fact, dual Autotune can be made to work very well on your M1100 by replacing both of your stock 02 sensors.  Although going for the PCV and having it nicely setup on a Dyno is the more conventional way to arrive at an excellent (static) result [thumbsup].

Two Solid Reasons, imo:

Direct input to the forks with clipons, rather than through a  central mounting point / risers and several other bolt connections means less flex.

If you go down with clipons - you replace only the clipon that's been damaged - which is less expensive than a complete bar. Similarly, you only have to redrill the mount-holes for the controls/switches/etc on that particular side, rather than both.

Seriously?  Speedymoto sells the replacement bars for his clipons in pairs, $50/pr.  You can buy a decent handlebar for about that same money.  Or you can buy a sexy carbon Driven bar for about half of the initial cost of the Speedy clipons.

Also, I don't think that this qualifies as a budget build. ;)

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike
Post by: junior varsity on April 18, 2011, 09:42:15 AM
That's the fancy speedymoto 'bent-end' bars.  SpeedyMoto learned from the mistake of CycleCat and did not use a proprietary bar design for their clipons - the clamps can use any normal clipon bar. You can buy expensive titanium bars from NCR to use, or carbon fiber bars, or you can simply get standard, non-angled clipon bars for $20-30.   Its about convenience more than budget, but I'd call that a smart move budget-wise too.   And its half the hassle of drilling for and moving both sides of the controls.

If you are buying spares by the pair, then it comes out cheaper again - they aren't sold by "Right" or "Left" - so if you go down twice on the right hand side, you aren't left with an extra LH bar and the need to re-buy a RH bar. You can flip-flop 'em back and forth.

If you are keeping the cosmetic theme of the bike going, though, a high-aesthetic MX-style handlebar that's tapered (since this is an M1100, and tapered bars flex less) is more than the cost of the pair of SM angled clipon replacement bars.

My guess is because the clip-ons look better. That's subjective, but that's why I would do it.  8) A practical reason is clip-ons offer more adjustability compared to bars, as they can be rotated to get the desired angle, whereas bars need to be changed to alter the angle.

Given the amount spent on the build, I can't see crash worthiness and/or cost being an issue.

I guess I was thinking that "while building it, do so to avoid hassles down the road".   The lower cost of replacing just a single bar is a small bit of silver lining when you bin a bike like this and bust one.

I hear what you're saying but am thoroughly convinced Arrick wouldn't sweat the cost of a new bar or clipon. I'm sure he picked the clipons because he likes how they look, plus with the aftermarket triple they're a lot lighter. The stock upper triple is a heavy beast.

The biggest reason for the clip-ons was to be able to really dial in the position of the bars / controls for me and my riding style. From what I have read here on the forum, I know there is some question about the adjustability of the Speedymoto clip-ons, but I will have to wait until I get the tank and panels back on before I can comment on that. I also prefer the cleaned up look of the front end with the clip-ons and new Speedymoto triples.

Should have some big progress to show by the weekend. Stay tuned.

You are going to need more engine work to pull of the "R" in that paint scheme, or risk the end result of an 'SP' type of build being mislabeled as an 'R' type of build (using current SBK letter designations as guide posts)

im pretty sure compared to any other current model monster sold at a dealer or here, his is an R

nice paint sir!

Current letter designations are following this trend:

S - upgraded forks and shock to Ohlins (or equivalent) mid-level components, add a piece or two of carbon. Depending on model line, the non-adj. damper is swapped with an adjustable unit (Superbikes - the SF retains the normal non-adj damper on the S model, and the Monster continues to go through life with no damper on any showroom floor model), likewise some models get lighter forged aluminum wheels.

SP - standard motor internals, but with lots of upgraded accessories like aluminum tank, fancier paint scheme, high end suspension, traction control, quick shifter, clutch setup, a few bits of carbon, the forged aluminum Marchesini wheels, etc.  the upgrades are all *external* to the motor

R - titanium valves, titanium con-rods, different pistons, different cams, different crank, etc plus a lot of the other features (like high end suspension, Corse traction control,  paint scheme, everything is carbon, aluminum tank, still the forged alu Marchesini wheels, etc - some "street" features like passenger pegs are gone for good), huge difference in power - the major changes are the big internal differences.

Its much closer to an SP with external changes like swingarm, some carbon, clutch & clutch cover, brakes, etc, and with some creature-comfort/aesthetic personal touches like the bars, etc.   Wouldn't be an "R" using Ducati's nomenclature (or an SPO or SPS for that matter), without at least a minimal change to cams, hi-comp pistons, and something as small as a lightweight flywheel - its a far shade from an R.   An "R" build in true Ducati fashion would have the cams and pistons PLUS upgraded con rods and lighter crank, and the valves would be lighter if not also up a size as well.

Its one of those things some non-authorized dealerships will try to pull by putting a few DP parts on a bike (like a slave cylinder, mirrors, clutch cover/pressure plate, and monster-Art body kit), and then calling it a special edition of one type or another.   That ain't "special", its simply 'rounded-out' - in the car world, that would be "dealer installed accessories" rather than a modified model (if you were to compare to something like a Yenko or a Lingenfelter, etc etc etc)

not bagging on his ride at all, it would be a beyond a hoot to ride and I'm excited to see the final product or final of 'phase 1' (and its net weight sans gas to see how it fares against the published dry weight #'s), but I am certainly going to egg him on to drop the motor and build it up some more:  Arrick could grab an OEM evo lighter weight charging system, lightened/balanced crank, +2mm bore & high compression, port/polish heads, thermal/ceramic coat exhaust port in head, Ti valves, DP/Nichols/Fox-machined lightweight flywheel, lightweight Z=20 roller kit (all 4 pulleys - 2 for cams, 2 for layshaft),  lighten the primary gears, etc.   That'd be very much an "R" model by any measure.

100mm pistals is the 'between-er', requiring just a bore from 98-to-100mm to the cylinders

While not required, it woudl certainly be advised to split the cases for a balanced (and lightened while you are at it) crank - which really isn't that spendy, add some beefier rods, and enjoy the results.

Unless someone cracks the case and bumps the 1100 to a 1200 with TI internals... I assume it will be bolt ons and paint.  But, with the voting being based on pictures... I doubt that would make much difference.

And if you're thinking NCR, you bore the cases on that one to have thicker walled cylinders than a big-bore'd cylinder would.... and they've apparently got a 1300 kit in the works.

That is what I was thinking... and a 1300 would just be stupid.  Fun, but stupid.

Imo that would be too much.  He nailed it just right with all the gold accents he has now.

On the other hand like a few before said, gold stitching on the seat would be hella sexy

I think he should replace the top of the seat material with some nice leather and get some kind of embroidery in it kind of like those custom choppers have.  That would be sick.

we haven't even seen a picture of the full bike, swing arm and all. that could be overkill, if thats even posible. also, if he got a magnesium trellis made, i don't think anyone would have said "thats just too much"  [coffee]

We may have not seen the full bike yet but the red stitching has already pulled a few peoples eyes away from the sexy curves of the bike.

I mean...its such a minor thing because the bike is just sex on wheels as it is.  But seeing as he is going all out and wants everything just right, getting rid of the red stitch in my opinion is key.

This bike looks amazing, though I think an exhaust like H-Competition would look better...

It would ruin this bikes personality. H-comp is too incredibly loud for this bike and it's attitude. In fact, it's pretty much too loud for any bike, trust me.

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike
Post by: DoWorkSon on April 27, 2011, 10:23:01 PM
I think a different exhaust would look much better. Boomtubes or am underseat exhaust which doesn't clutter the backend and allows the swingarm and other parts to stand out. I'm not a fan of the termis or many of the other slip ons for how they look and swallow up the back end of the bike.

However I think your right about it not matching this bikes personality... This bike is too pretty and refined for the h-comp exhaust

And btw I love my h-comp exhaust, it's not too loud, it can never be too loud

dude... It's loud as make the beast with two backs. When I ride in groups they make me stay in the back.  >:(

Basically like a 2 cylinder funny car.

I've had people tell me they can hear it from campus when I'm at my house over a mile away. I wish the mythical "baffle" that was advertised actually existed. The thing I received stopped gas flow and caused the PC to turn white.

Regardless, I'd put the "quiet" boomtubes on this 1100, but termi's are always classy.

+1 on the termi's fitting on this bike... plus, i'm pretty sure he must have gotten a pretty decent deal on them with his job.

ever since i've seen those termi's ceramic coated, i know that if/when i ever get a 696 mid pipe, that's going to be my next winter mod along with the headers.  and i'll also be copying removal of the sticker and spraying on a stencil instead... but prob in flat white for mine.

I don't know....I think the "refined" aspects of this bike and the nasty aspects of the h-comp exhaust would go well together.  Kinda like the prom queen slipping ya the pinky when she is droppin dome!

Per the suggestion of a member on the Ducati Community, we’re going to start a pool (kind of) for closest guess at the new weight of the bike. We would be honored to have you participate and if you make it to the finals, we’ll have your bike shipped to Indy and give you a VIP Ducati MotoGP experience just as we would for any of the other finalists.

Looking forward to seeing your bike in the challenge!

Arrick, thank you.. but I cannot accept based on a misconception.
I work for the Army as a government employee.

I served in the Air force previously. As an Army civilian, I have been in Kosovo, Bosnia and Iraq on short missions, but never in danger (unless you count sitting in a C-130 travelling through northern Iraq low enough to draw enemy fire... on purpose according to the loadmaster so they can help out the SF guys... as in danger)

We have a few members on this forum who are active duty and I would hope that if that is the required criteria that you would extend that to them.

Anything from "Ducati Performance" will be purchasable from any authorized Ducati dealership - if not in stock, they will be able to order it (assuming it is still current production parts).

Do I detect a bit of sarcasm? ;)  Well, you'll be happy to know I'm holding off on that bike. I don't think I'm ready to part with the current ride, so if anything, and if I can swing it, a new to me GT1000 will need to be an 'in addition to' rather then an 'instead of'.

Would love to check out that ride of yours at Laguna, but, oh wait, I'm not going. Instead, I'll be in Portland with my in-laws. Ask me where I'd rather be?  :-\

Everybody seems to say that Boomtubes degrade performance, and he obviously cares about performance, so a full Termi system (or similar) makes sense. I agree that the Boomtubes look great, though (and weigh less, too).

Must be the angle/light, cause they look SUPER glossy.  All the forks I've ever seen ano'd were a flat/satin black

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike
Post by: junior varsity on July 17, 2011, 01:09:42 PM
Well, they certainly could have been cleared over, but I think the Ohlins-black anodization is pretty glossy - kopfjager had his ohlins rearshock re-ano'd black by Ohlins, and the desmo's forks come that way from the factory

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike

If you don't mind....who did the forks?  Last few sets I've had done were hard anodized.  Much flatter of a finish, but I like the gloss (as long as it will hold up).

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike
Post by: junior varsity on August 11, 2011, 06:44:17 AM
my guess is back to Ohlins in North Carolina; that's who blacked the ohlins shock on kopfjager's machine

i'd like to have 'em do some of my bits and pieces as well, but re-blacking the shock is around $400, and respringing with a titanium spring is also $350-400, and for the substantial decrease in weight on a working/moving part, the Ti Spring is winning the battle for money I don't have in my head right now.

Title: Re: M1100 Project Bike
Post by: arrick on August 11, 2011, 09:36:37 AM
I worked directly with Ohlins USA in Hendersonville, NC. They outsource their anodizing to someone local to them. I am not sure who...
