Memorial Day Weekend
Friday May 27th - Monday May 30th


Where is it?

The 2011 West Coast DIMBY will be hosted by SacDuc and Polpetta in beautiful Santa Barbara, CA. If you are going to attend just send me a PM and I will send you the address. We are just a few blocks from the beach and less than a mile from the harbor.


How can I get there?

MOTORCYCLE: Ride your bike dummy! There are at least two people riding down from the Bay Area as well as folks coming from MoorPark and Ojai. If you are coming up from LA you should pack a sweater. And rain gear. Maybe a lunch. And your GPS.  Ah screw it, you should probably take the car. [cheeky]

CAR: We Have friends driving in from both San Diego and the Bay Area. If you want to hitch a ride I can put you in contact with these people.

TRAIN: The Amtrak station is about a mile from our house. If you want to take the train in we'll be happy to pick you up. OR the Santa Barbara Ducati Dealer is right next to the train station. And they rent Hyper Motards and Multistradas!


Where can I stay?

OUR HOUSE: So here's the deal, our house is tiny. 1100sqft. And our lot is only a 1/4 acre. But if you can find a spot to pitch a tent or a space to lay a sleeping bag/air mattress on the floor it is all yours. Or you could call dibs on the hammock on the front deck. The cool part is that we are only a few blocks from the beach and have ocean views from the front and back yards. All are welcome. Crash where you can.

CAMPING ELSEWHERE: There are some beautiful places to camp around here. I personally don't work hard all year just to pretend I'm homeless on the weekends, but you can find places HERE (http://www.santabarbaraca.com/hotels-and-hideaways/camping-and-rv-parks/) El Capitan is just gorgeous.

HOTELS: So you don't want to stay in a tiny house with three huge dogs, huh? Being a tourist town, there are a lot of hotels nearby, but that weekend they are likely to be expensive. But everything from a Motel 6 to a five star resort is available. I suggest booking a room early and using expedia, travelosity or hotels.com to find a deal. Can I rent a bike?

What is going on that weekend?

FRIDAY NIGHT: Friday we will likely just be eating, drinking and being merry. There are plenty of clubs and bars to hit if that is your thing.


SATURDAY: Big ol' bacon breakfast. I suspect people ill be trickling in throughout the day. Then there are options. I'm thinking the MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM (http://www.motosolvang.com) in Solvang would be in order. The run up the 154 has some nice sweepers and some nice scenery. Perhaps some beach time if'n y'all want. Then booze. Lots and lots of booze.

SUNDAY: Group ride in the morning!  A parade pace from Hwy 101 to the 150 out to Ojai. Breakfast at Eggs n Things. Then it is high speed twisty time up the 33. [moto] Back in Santa Barbara there will be lots of music, food, drink, hookers, blow, goats, Mongoloid Dwarves and mashed potatoes, because that's what kind of party this is going to be. I will be spatchcocking things. Also, there will be squirt guns filled with bourbon and a few prizes to given out for things like "longest traveled" "most modified bike" and "Angriest German".

Joel, I've thought about this. Here is how you can attend. Tell you boss there is a moto gathering of a group you are affiliated with and you want to attend. But you are scheduled to work. Then make him a deal. If you can pre-sell X dollars worth of goods to those attending this event then you can have the day off to deliver these items in person. I mean these would be totally extra sales for the store as most of the people attending would never actually show up at your store. And its good PR for the cyclegear brand in general. How much do you think you would have to sell for your boss to be okay with it? Could you offer a 10% discount to encourage sales? I'm certain you can work this.

By the way, I need some new gloves.  ;)  Your first sale is made.

Polpetta's friend Elizabeth has a friend Sandra in SD and they will both becoming in for DIMBY. You think Sandra could hitch a ride or ride the rails with you? There will be a few people not going on the rides. They will keep you entertained.

Don't do it before you're ready.  I was just kidding with you.  I didn't ride someone two up until I'd been riding for a few years.

Here's a good link to read, although I don't recommend riding aggressively with a pillion until you're super comfortable with them and your bike.  It gives some good tips.  They've been riding together for a long long time.  Never ride beyond your abilities, ESPECIALLY with a passenger!   [thumbsup]

Bike seems to be OK.  She's getting a tune up, fender eliminator and new Rizoma indicators. 

Funny..prior to the drop, my left CRG would always move inward with the wind.  Now, it's actually staying in place.  I guess one that's one positive.

Just so everyone is aware of the basic outline for the weekend:

Friday: show up if you want we will feed you and get you drunk   ;D  I think IZ is showing up on May 3rd or so, just let me know if you wanna come in early.

Saturday: I suspect most people will be showing up this day. Again, we will feed you and get you drunk. There will likely be trips to the beach, SB Ducati and perhaps a little putt putt. Dinner will be huge. There will booze and music in the evening.

Sunday: Ride in the morning - 150 to Ojai. Breakfast in Ojai. Then a run up the 33. Back to SB for more booze and food and music. There will be a designated smoking area, but you can smoke whatever the make the beast with two backs you want to there.  ;D

Monday: GET THE make the beast with two backs OUT!! I mean, um, I mean it as nice having you over.  :)  Here have some  [bacon] I will likely ride north with those going that way. I figure we can stop for breakfast/lunch in Santa Ynez or Lompoc or where ever.

If the cops don't show up at some point I will consider the weekend to be a failure.   ;D

Yesterday morning I was IN for DIMBY West.

Mr. AJ was cool with me ditching him for the weekend (he and many friends had plans to play guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddles etc. at a 3 day bluegrass festival, I was not enthused)

I could stay with an SB friend who'd help me imbalance the gender ratio further.

But how to get there? Of the three bikes I could ride down: Mr. AJ's M900 won't start, his fugly SV is still in parts after 3 weekends of wrenching (fix 1 thing, discover 3 more issues), and my itty bitty 250 is too small to make the 600+ mile journey.

Well, yesterday afternoon I picked up a really nice SV650, great condition for an '06 bike, less than 5,000 miles, garaged & babied.  And for an SV, it was easy on the eyes & ears, with Yoshimura pipes, bright red (black frame), rear seat cowl & no grab bar.  Not bad for a non-Ducati. 

The first thing I did was add frame sliders, despite Mr. AJ saying I was being ridiculous and wouldn't need them.

Given that I like to get accustomed to bikes before I throw myself into high speed situations, given Mr. AJ has years more moto experience than I do, and given that we had over an hour drive on the freeway in the dark to get the bike back, he offered to ride it. 

We almost made it to my house.

On the upper deck of the Bay Bridge, where the views of San Francisco below you are spectacular, everyone started braking, and somehow, he has no idea why, Mr. AJ lost the front end. Issue with the bike? Shitty driving? Who knows.

Lucky for him, he only bounced around the road. No flying into vehicles, no getting run over, no concussion, no major damage to anything other than one arm. Unfortunately for him, he did a great job fragmenting his dominant hand and arm.

So this weekend he won't be playing his guitar.  I won't be riding down the PCH and making chocolate covered bacon.  He'll be getting several plates, screws and pins put into his arm, and I'll be taking care of him.  And fixing my bike.

As for my tolerance, Carl and Mel have been working with me every weekend for the last two months on being able to function after drinking more than 3/4 of a Corona Light...  [laugh]

Lucky for me, through the due diligence of these two fine upstanding members of our community, I've killed off all the weak liver cells so only the strong have survived.  This has considerably increased my tolerance and at last count, I didn't hit the floor until after much alcohol had been consumed...  I think between us we went through 3 bottles of Prosecco, polished of the bottles of Limoncello and Di Saronno, Woodford's, and a couple of Dirty Gringos.  There may have been a bottle or two of white wine in there as well...   [evil]

I ended up on the floor, BoBo (the fluffy dog) sat on my head.  Well, he tried to sit on my head, but slid off my shaved skull.  I had a 130 pound fluffy hat to keep me warm!  ;D

Anyway, I think I'm ready for DIMBY.....  I've been practicing!   [beer]

He aint kidding.  I visited them a few weekends ago, the day after their "dress rehearsal", and I can attest that they are doing their damnedest to increase his alcohol tolerance level.  The pile of bottles in their driveway would put most college bars to shame.

Had a make the beast with two backsing blast this weekend!  The amount of booze consumed as staggering. Unfortunately some freak rain cut the ride down to about 100 miles, but it was still nice. This weekend was pretty much about mystery shots and inappropriate jokes.

The big thanks to the DMFers who came to SB, bottles of booze in hand, to make the weekend so much fun.

Special thanks to slowpoke for bringing grenades of Mickey's. It felt like high school all over again.

Yeah its tall. I got a 31" inseam and i can tippytoe it. Mostly im use to riding dirtbikes so its not an issue and you just pay attention to where you stop.Its lite and easy to balance. Suppose it can be lowered is you really want to. The single is fun, the twin would be best and more stable for commuting.

About the wind chime:

That is, or rather was, my neighbor's wind chime. As you can heard in the video its worst sounding wind chime ever made. And the asshole hung it 10ft from my house. You don't hang wind chimes in neighborhoods ith 5' side yards. You just don't. Hearing that make the beast with two backsing thing every time I sat on my deck as driving me insane. I told people I'd give $50 bucks to whoever stole that make the beast with two backsing thing.

Earlier in the day we were at a bar at the harbor. So we get ready to leave and Dan just has to do the tourist bit and get pictures of the harbor (see above). well sure as shit we get to the car and there is a $48 parking ticket that was put there not five minutes before we got there. we would have made it out of there had Dan not adopted the Asian attitude towards picture taking. Despite the fact that we pregnant doged at him the entire time he insisted on taking a few thousand pictures. I told him he had to get the wind chime for me to square it all up.

So from what I'm told, he climbed my fence, Crowbar held his feet and Dan snatched that make the beast with two backsing wind chime right off of the corner of my neighbor's house.

I got the better end of that deal. Dan, you are truly the man.   [thumbsup]

we were trying to decide between drinking and riding. Since two of us road 400+ miles the day before and the other two are local and can ride these roads whenever we want, we decided on drinking. Off to the Harbor we went.

Some time around beer three orangelion calls Bacon Junkie and confirms that he will indeed make it. Cool.  8)  The conversation went as follows. And keep in mind that poor Lloyd was just taken to the hospital about an hour ago.

After lane-splitting for 20 miles, I decided it was time to get off the slab and take IZ the last 15 miles or so through the hills above Carpinteria and Montecito. 

Now, I've talked about this little stone bridge over this little creek on the 192 before in previous posts.  Well, IZ comes around this little lefthander and throttles up. Too late, he sees me go over the bridge.  Oops... [evil]  ;D   

 IZ was a trooper.  After missing an exit that would have given him smooth sailing, he lane-split for over an hour through LA traffic... And LIKED IT!!!  :o  He showed up at my school right around pick up time, fought all the parents' SUV's in the parking lot, and then followed my crazy ass another 45+ minutes up to Santa Barbara.  ;D

I made several new friends (that I've known for years) this weekend.  This little community of ours here on the interwebz is one of the greatest groups I've ever been a part of.  I've competed at a high level in several different sports, played in world renowned concert halls with several symphony orchestras, and teach with an amazing crew at my school.

But, the fact that someone can ride 10+ hours to meet someone he knows only from a bunch of snarky remarks and innapropriate jokes, follow them through obnoxious traffic, through tight and twisty backroads, over jumps, all in the name of camraderie and a good time, speaks volumes about what this forum is about.

Surprisingly, IZ isn't as short as I expected. Maybe the smaller doors, windows, and tiny furniture helped make him look normal size.

Lol thanx guys. No i didnt i was just messing with u guys the closest thing i have to a bike is my beach cruiser which is pink by the way. Lol yeah me n mr it had a blast over with u guys.
