Title: Okay to ride past 600 mile service?
Post by: golgofett on April 28, 2010, 03:49:20 PM
I just hit my 600 mile mark on my m1100.  The service center is booked for 2 weeks.  Am I ok to keep riding?  Now that I hit 600 miles, I can go to 7000 RPMS per the manual.  Should I just stick with the 6000 RPMS until service?

just stick to the 6k rpm, 2 weeks isn't long.

Change and inspect the oil yourself.  Save some money and go ride.

Nice write up on the 600 mile service DIY in motorcyclist:

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/howto/600_mile_service/index.html (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/howto/600_mile_service/index.html)

AFAIK, Ducati doesn't mentioning checking valves at 600 miles

A few hundred extra miles will be fine.  As far as max RPM goes, not as crucial as people think.  Most important in break in is to avoid constant RPM/load, in other words, avoid the slab.

when I buyed my m696+ this your they inclueded the first 600 miles/ 1000 km checkup for free. No need to pay, its a ducati service

This was a temporary promotion as I understand. It was one of three options last year to include trades and a third I cant' recall.

i'd just check the oil for chunks of metal and replace it myself.

make sure the oil you get doens't have friction reducers or have "energy conserving" on the bottle.

Some people will diasgree about the break in....

the break in period is your chance to make an impression on the engine. I say get it warmed up, and run the bike like you stole it. 600 mile is to make sure the bike is running correctly after it got put together and actually road tested. nothing more.

changing oil is very important though!

For the love of Cod, not another break in argument thread  [evil]

Here's (In My Not Very Humble Opinion) the definitive break in guide for bikes:

I doubt running a few hundred miles past the 600K will hurt the bike much. But FWIW, if the service centre records the mileage accurately you'll lose the opportunity to advertise the bike later as "maintained by the book, full service records".  [bang]

I'm afraid that if you hit 605 miles (there's a built-in safety margin of 5 miles) without having had the 600-mile service, your engine will explode. It's true!

Actually, though, the dealer just told my wife it's better to go beyond the 600 miles before getting the service done rather than bringing it before it's racked up enough mileage.

I'm at 617 miles on my 2009 Monster 696. Shouldn't the service light be on by now? I thought I read on another thread (but I can't find it anymore) that the service light will need to be reset at the dealer. My dealer says that they can reset when it comes on even if it's not on now. Anyone know how true that is? It would be a pain to bring in again a week later just to have them reset the light.

check the faq, but i believe it's jsut like the bikes before.
hold the left button on the gauge cluster in as you turn the bike on.

No, I don't think the 696 service light works like the older bikes.

Older bikes don't have no service light!

no, but there is a "maint" indicator which flashes on the odometer section of the gauges

Among other things, there is no left button on the gauge cluster (nor indeed any buttons on the gauge cluster). I haven't found a way to reset the service indicator without access to the magic Ducati service computer.

The service light has to be reset by the dealer for the 696 and 1100.  I had to wait until 600 miles after my 600 mile service to get my wrench icon reset on the 696 because the dealer did not have the cable yet.   There is no secret way to remove the wrench icon without the cable.

can't say that i'm a fan of that.

Or you can buy VDST kit and reset the wrench yourself (and reset TPS, adjust fuel trim, clear DTC's, and other cool sh!t). I love having the kit, paid for itself ($199) many times over not having to go to dealer. Chris at CA Cycleworks sells them, or direct from TechnoResearch.

Really? I'd assumed they were way more expensive than that. With 2 Ducatis that would most definitely be worth it. Even if my dealer were willing to do resets for free (I haven't asked), they're 60 miles away.

Well, you can buy it, but it might not be of any use on a 696. That model is not listed at Technoresearch's site, and Desmo Times's site specifically says it will not work on the Siemens ECU on the 696.

I've emailed Technoresearch to ask about this.

Back to the original poster , you can go up to 1000 miles and not hurt your bike as long as you continue to ride it like you have been riding it.

You want your bike to go through many heat cycles and those heat cycles will seat your rings properly which is very important for the life of the engine.

The top ring is your compression ring which allows the charge in the cylinder to build up to the maximum compression before detonation and you want that ring to be seated nice and tight to keep all the fuel  /air mixture in the cylinder above the piston and not allow any to leak down below the piston head . The next ring cleans oil off the side of the cylinder as the piston returns on the compression stroke so by breaking in the bike properly it will allow the second ring to seat properly.

The same for the third ring .

Proper break in  will give your engine the best start for a long healthy life . Along with regular oil changes.

Dolph      :)

On the new 696 and 1100, the maintenance light will not come on until about 620 miles.  The light is scheduled to come on at 1,000 kilometers, so it's not gonna be there when you hit 600 on the head.
