Forged from 1080 and differentially heat treated.  I get them to this point and then loose interest in finishing out handles. 

I made functional rockets out of old beer cans once.  [thumbsup]

Beer Can Rockets - more fun, less frustrating than pounding steel into shapes it doesn't want to be in - plus the beer and the green recycling angle - COOL!

Awesome stuff! I love looking at cool stuff folks think of and then make it happen with their hands. I can't do shit and have no talent so I really appreciate folks that have all that. I built this from a very run down old property, unfortunately had to sell due to a break up. Sold it about 3 years ago.

Awesome stuff.  I am shopless at the moment. I've thought about building a shop since I moved here, however I always thought I would be in the DC area for a couple of years at most.  10 years later, I am still here without a shop.  I have most of the tools, but my carpentry is oriented towards my house lately.  Want to get back into blacksmithing (took a few classes) and welding (took a bunch of classes and worked in muffler and 4x4 fab shop).  No place to work though.....

Soon I will be building some built in shelving in my new living room/dining room (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=32276.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=32276.0)) with a TV cabinet complete with TV lift.  I have a half completed coffee table I am making out of a cherry tree I had cut down a year ago.  It was huge and had a double trunk.  Maybe I'll get around to finishing that.......wish I had access to a blacksmith shop to make some legs....

Virtually all of my blacksmithing in the DC area was out at Colvin Run Mill in Fairfax County, VA; they've got a turn of the century (the previous one) era blacksmith shop on site and in exchange for volunteering behind the anvil & answering (several times a day) "Well, actually farriers make horseshoes...", I got all the mild steel & coal I could burn. I brought my own hammers, tongs & other hand tools (because the ones there in the shop are community property and look like it) and any specialty/tool steels I wanted, but it's a great deal, a lot of fun, and some great camaraderie with the other volunteer smiths. I went to a couple of demonstrations as well at the Blacksmiths Guild of Potomac shop in Arlington, VA -- it's a beautiful, well-equipped shop and a great deal at just $35 a year for membership. I don't know how they schedule time at the anvil, but some of the pieces that members make are stunning!!!

im an engineer at a large foundry.  we specialize in centrifugal castings, so we make mostly round things with holes in them, natch.   today actually i engineered my smallest part ever, 3" OD x 5/8" thick cobalt (stellite) ring.  the largest jobs to go across my desk are seal rings for a hydro-electric dams.  last month i did a 180" set (+/- 0.005" on the ID too).

I have an old wood stove in the basement.  I added a copper coil that feeds a hot water storage tank which feeds my domestic hot water.  Obviously there's more to it, expansion tank, pressure relief, etc.  make the beast with two backs you OPEC!

That's purty flooring.  I'll be interested to know how you like it from a durability standpoint.  I have been wanting to replace my downstairs flooring with something light.

It makes me happy that people are interpreting "Made This" broadly -- music, bread, well-farmed freshies, engineering, work, home improvements. Babies.

And the level that you're all working at is really inspiring; I tend to give away a lot of my work, because when I look at it I see the mistakes or the things I would/should have done a bit differently. Seeing real craftsmen & craftswomen at work here & elsewhere gives me motivation to get back to it. Well, except for the babies part. We've got our hands full with one teen as it is.

Beautiful work!  What is that stone, and what do you call a cut like that, with the little "wings" on each side?

It's a cubic zirconium, but if your woman asks, use the more common name of "Diamond".  ;)

No, that's the real thing!

The center stone is a 19ct (E, VS1) radiant cut and the side stones are 3ct (E, VS1 & 2) trillion cut each. The mounting is made out of platinum.

No CZ work out of my shop!

It's a setting worthy of such a jaw-dropping piece of geology. Fantastic work.

19ct? That doesn't look big enough to me to be 19. Just based on the ring size for comparison, it looks like 4-5. Granted I don't know much about stones. Is there anything else besides size that ct is used for?

BTW, I'm not doubting you, it just sounds funny to me...

It's hard to make a large stones/ring look and fit like a smaller piece, I guess that the mission was accomplished.

To give you a better idea of size of the stone:

-a 5ct would measure roughly 8.25 x 6.25mm

-this stone measures 18.53 x 14.23mm

the hand is made entirely of punches, files, chisels, and star drills and a red oak log

the outdoor piece is installed in Jonesboro, LA in front of a nonprofit college alternative learning center

the kiln is a cone 10 soda type at LaTech's ceramics lab, that door articulates to be slid straight into the kiln opening(trick) and the door arm is made of 2" rebar

the saw bike can be ridden and operates alot like it looks, but it definately pedals!!

and the tattoo machine I made for a local tattoo shop and after being dicked around regarding the payment I collected my shit and now it lives in my bike shop

I've more but this was most everything done in 2009, I haven't had time to do shit in terms of making since the divorce and new business(September), but I've a stash of used bike chains and cables that will undoubtly sacrifice all on the workbench alter

Do you grow wipers (hybrids) or striped bass.  I'm itching for striper season to kick off here in about a month.  The big dudes come up the Potomac chasing river herring pre-spawn.  Awesome stuff.

Does fsihing count as being creative?  One of the smaller fish.  We regularly catch fish over 50"

I practically live on the Potomac from early March through early May.  I start my day 3-4 days a week at the river by 5am and off by 9 or 10am.  Fishing for stripers then hickory shad, then American shad.  The next couple of months make living in DC tolerable......If you are in the area during that time, I guarantee that I can put you on fish.

Getting a new furnace and new AC this week and needed to fix some serious grading problems.  Will finish with a brick surface and I will use it to hide the trash cans on a side of the house I never see.

As a Daddy I don't have the time to run off for fishing anymore. I used to do a lot of night fishing for cats. And in CO I always enjoyed fly and creek fishing for trout. I've never caught anything remotely close to that size. A couple cats at 2+ft but not even in the ballpark. If I ever head for DC I WILL be contacting you for a little river guide action.  [thumbsup]

I'll fish for anything with anything, but my favorite is fly fishing for trout.  The trout fishing around here is OK, but my favorite is anywhere in the Rocky Mtn's.

Some days striper fishing you can't keep the blue cats off your hook.  I've had days where you could fill the row boat with blues over 30 pounds.  We regularly hang 50 pounders on whole herring.  I like catching them, but we will usually switch holes if we are catching cats and not stripers.  The Potomac is FULL of giant blues.

Sorry for the thread jack.....I've been jonesing all week for the spring action.

The hatchery I'm currently at only does striped bass. I transfered about 4 months ago from a larger facility that did 50/50 hybrid/striped. The place I'm at now is a more research oriented facility (thats why we have full grown fish on site). All the fish that we raise go into public water bodies in the state of Texas (and some in CO the last couple years). If you've caught a hybrid or striper in Texas, it most likely came from one of our hatcheries. There is only one inland water body in the state that substains it's own striper population.

We also do Channel cats, Small mouth, and saugeye here.

Right now we are in the middle of a put and take trout season in Texas...but we buy all these fish grown out, as we don't have proper conditions to do our own trout in Texas

It is in NOLA on Magazine St.  It is called the Savvy Gourmet.  It was orignally a cooking school/retail store, but now I think they are a restaurant.  They also may still have cooking classes.  I worked on it when I was in architecture school.

Holy crap! I've never been in, though I've been meaning to get over there for a class (they mostly do Wed. evenings these days). I've received a number of presents (cookware) from that shop, and based on what I've got, I suspect it's really nice.

So I discovered that the battery clamp on the ST2 had developed a crack & was on the verge of failure, right as I was suiting up to ride over to the metal shop where i've been smithing lately. What to do? Zip-tied it in place for the ride, and hand-forged a quick replacement.

The flat stock I used was the right size to begin with, but after I forged the spiral & the tab for the screw mount, I couldn't resist peening the edges and smacking all of the visible surfaces so it'd look a little more rustic and, you know, hand made...

Pretty much all of this stuff is awesome, most of it beyond my capabilities.

I'm currently building a 30,000 liter bio-reactor that I designed, for growing algae (mostly for bio-fuel production).  I might be able to post pictures when I'm done, have to check with the Boss...  [coffee]

Growing algae? Hell, I thought that's what my 'frig is for? Gotta clean that sucker out one of these days. ;D Maybe I'll just sell it to your company! [laugh]

[clap]  Actually, we grow it to sell to other companies, to seed their grow operations.  Large ponds for serious production are over 100,000 liters up to a million liters.  We grow specialized algae with really good characteristics for others...our systems are closed bio reactors which keeps the product pure.

Here are a couple of things I've worked on recently; thanks to the generosity of my friend Rick Hartner, the proprietor & artist at Sitting Duck Studio http://www.sittingduckstudio.com/ (http://www.sittingduckstudio.com/). He lets me sit in & use his forge and well-appointed metal shop.

This is a piece (not complete in this photo) I helped him with for the Garden Show at the San Diego Botanic Garden; his idea was to build a Roadster out of rebar & other re-claimed materials as required by the show. He asked me to make the driver; just a few days before he had to load everything up and head to San Diego, he added a spectacular dog to the passenger seat, tongue waving in the breeze.

Last Friday, I spent some time plasma cutting shapes out of an old truck bumper we dug out of a sandbar as a part of a big community-wide creek cleanup. Of some ten tons of trash that Prescott Creeks volunteers pulled out of the creeks that day, about three tons (ie., all the cool metal bits) will be "upcycled" into art pieces, many of which will be sold at auction this Fall to raise money for the organization. I'm thinking of these as the wind-catching elements for an Alexander Calder-inspired mobile sculpture; don't look too close, as I really suck at free-hand plasma cutting:

I made some sawdust this weekend.  I cleaned my bathroom on Fri and it looked kind of empty.  The picture frame is a stud I pulled out of my 140 year old barn, with a scrap of walnut ply in the middle.  The chunk of walnut slab is a scrap from a dining room table I am building for my mother.  I also scrounged up the last little bit of solid 3/4 walnut I had to make the bracket.  I'd say about 4 hours worth of work, $0.00 spent.

An 11" carcase saw, I think I finished it last year. I've used it to build some furniture.

FPants - that's splendid work!!!! I wish I had the skills & tools to do that kind of woodworking.

FP- that saw is pretty.  I picked up a Veritas DT saw about a year ago, and I just can't get into working with western saws.  Japanese saws just do it for me, but I'm sure I'd learn to love it with a saw as nice as that one!

Do you cut and set your own teeth?  How is that done?  Interesting.  I taught myself how to set up and sharpen big peg and raker crosscut saws but I don't know much about the small ones.

Yes, I did it with a 5" double ex-slim taper saw file in a saw vise. I think it's 11teeth per inch. I used an old Stanley 42X saw set for fairly minimal set. I used a template made by a home/hobbiest saw maker who spaced some lines out (11 lines/in) in AutoCAD and used the printout as filing guide. Very tedious work, but it was worth the effort after the first few cuts. It was filed rip, since this was my second saw I've ever made or even sharpened, I didn't want to confuse myself with crosscut teeth and all the fleam angles/etc...

The saw plate was cut from a section of .020" thick 1095 spring steel and fit into a .020" slot machined into a 1/4" x 5/8" piece of brass.
Well, I say machined, but it was a jig I made with a slitting arbor in a drill press.

She's working on her old house in Oregon and plans to give a nod to the whole feng shui idea of water in the entry by painting a koi pond across the floor of her enclosed front porch. I was aiming for more of a trigger fish...  I started by cutting the halves of the fish out of 1/8" plate, hammered them concave so the finished fish is hollow & about an inch thick (one side had the dorsal & other small fins, the other had the tail on it) and welded the two together. Grinding, adding the pelvic & pectoral fins, popping a round weld bead on each side for eyes got it to this point.

I always wanted one made out of wood but they didn't make them at the time so I made it. It has a plastic core from a speed cube, hand carved red oak edges, and veneers on the faces burls, rainbow wood, zebra, fire maple, etc.

Vindingo & Punx - that's beautiful work; I've long wanted to do more work in wood, but haven't had the skills or the tools. Lucky me, the barn/garage across the street is slowly turning into a shared workshop among several of us in the neighborhood -- I've moved my welding table & little 115 MIG welder over there, and a big, rehabbed air compressor, and one of the participants is a friend & pretty accomplished woodworker (and he's renting the house in front of the barn, so that's where his tools will live) so I'm hoping to pick up some knowledge.

Looks like the fish will be a Christmas present for my sister, so I've been playing with it a little more. I added another set of fins and used a hand torch to get some color into the fins & mouth.

Another project that's getting closer to done is a knife I'm making for my godson from a worn-out file, to commemorate his becoming an Eagle scout. I picked up some saddle leather yesterday (I'd forgotten how expensive that stuff is!) and made a simple sheath:

I still need to color the leather & emboss his initials on it, and I'm still messing with the edge profile toward the tip of the knife, but it's getting close.

I like the knife - that 1095 doesn't pull out that thin easily - looks good.  How are you going to heat treat it?

Fortunately, it was a fairly thin file to begin with. I did the quench in transmission fluid, then cleaned the blade up. For tempering, I heated up a big chunk of steel in the forge to orange heat, pulled it out onto the bench and set the spine of the blade on it. It's slower and more of a PITA than using a torch, but I'm not that good at controlling the temper with a torch, and the big chunk of steel method is a lot easier (for me) to direct. I drew the temper out to light straw along the edge.

Good point. I'd been looking at the BSA eagle badge (I've got one of those in a drawer around here somewhere...) and trying to figure out if I can do a stylized rendering of it. With my limited skills & equipment for leatherwork, trying for too much detail will get very ugly, very fast.

most files are made of 1095 or similar.  After you quench,  you can put it in the oven at 375 for an hour or so and let it cool slow - should give you RC 59 or so.  It should cut like mad!

Going to sand it down a bit and repaint.. but then I want to put some pictures, bottle caps etc and poor an acrylic over top..  anyone know a good one? Should I make a frame around the top about half inch or more to shape and hold it in?  How do I make it so when I pull the frame off it doesn't stick?

Pouring 1/2" thick epoxy is going to be $$$ and it will take you about 4-5 pours to get 1/2".  That is a week (one layer per day to cure) of having noxious fumes in your apartment.  You are better off leaving out the bottle caps, using only the photos and pouring a 1/16" layer of epoxy.  Open a window with a fan blowing out. 

It looks like you learned what happens when you sand veneer ply too much.  Some 1x trim and brad nails could dress up the edges nicely.   

Yea I used wood filler n sanded.. but it only really shows in the pictures. Ill check out the trim..  Yea ill just do the pic thing only...

Make sure you wear long gloves and maybe some other protective items - some people are allergic to those resins.  My wife poured a lot of cypress clocks, and other items and usually ended up with a nasty rash out of it until she started suiting up when she used it.  I don't seem to react to it, but be aware you might or someone else in your household.  It didn't seem to be directly related to contact so watch the vapors also.  They do look cool when you are done though!

She used some stuff called EnviroTex Lite - it seemed to work pretty well but I don't know if there is better stuff out there - we haven't done much of this in the last 5 years or so.  Wouldn't hurt to snoop around a bit and see if there is some newer/better products.

The local bicycle/pedestrian advocacy group just held their big annual dinner and asked me again this year to come up with four awards for people, businesses & organizations they wanted to honor. I remembered the  forged rebar hands I'd made for another sculpture a while back, and decided those might look kind of cool holding bike cogs:

I've been thinking about doing something similar, but with pennies, nickels, and dimes.

There's a cafe downtown that used chunks of reclaimed wood (they're located next to a theater, and would get donations from each set tear down). I think they only did one pour, so the surfaces of their tables are pretty uneven, but yet still usable for glasses and plates.

Tonight is opening night at Granite Mountain Brewing, a new brewpub opened by a quartet of my friends in a cool space downtown.

Since it's opening night and I'm no longer sworn to secrecy, I can post this picture of a piece I did for over the front door, steel silhouettes that are set off the wall by an inch or so of two local landmarks - Thumb Butte on the left and the bar's namesake Granite Mountain on the right.  (And a soon to be obsolete Ducati Corse #46 hat in the middle)

I finished off a bunch of stuff over the weekend, most of it for an upcoming show & auction that my honey is putting on for Prescott Creeks, the local watershed protection group - it's all "upcycled" art, made by local artists from stuff pulled out of our local creeks. This started out as a rusty piece of steel about an inch wide, half an inch thick & about 18" long. And the walnut in the handle came from scraps I scavenged along with some odd bits of birdseye maple from the bar pictured a few entries above.

These tiny items can't compare to the beauty of Vinny's wood-working or triangleforge's metal-art, but they have an appeal to me that's endured nearly my entire life.

These are "pictures" of molecules determined from X-ray diffraction.  The grey ellipsoids are carbon atoms, red = oxygen, blue = nitrogen and pink = boron.  Hydrogens and several other carbon atoms have been omitted to reveal the "business end" of the structures.  The grey lines connecting the atoms are bonds.  I designed their construction with certain torsion angles in mind.  Amongst other things, the structures are being "used" to uncover the details of how molecules conduct electricity. 

I think that's impossibly cool, DucHead.

That bathroom is....oooouuuuuunnnnnnggggggggghhhhhhhhh.... :'( sorry...I just messed my pants...  ;D

Anyway, as I have been upgrading my home audio gear, I am eyeballing my latest project.

For my 2 channel system, I want to build a 2 or 3 shelf audio rack. The shelves would be separate from each other but stackable.

Materials list:
6061 Aluminum Sheet 3/4"x24"x24" (Shelves...unfinished...maybe roloc disk lightly ran over the surface)
4x 2"x2"x10" Bocote (or any other exotic hardwood 2x2 turning blank for that matter) Legs
4x 1/2"x4" machine head screws (appropriately sized brass inserts for legs)
4x 6061 "isolation" cones with 3/8" studs (appropriate sized brass inserts for the bottom of the legs)

The design is pretty simple. Center the legs 1/2" in from each side at the corners. Drill through the top of the aluminum sheet centered on the leg location. Drill the legs for the insert. install the insert and do the same for the iso cones for the other ends of the legs.
The top of the sheet would be countersunk to allow the next shelf's cones to rest snugly in them.

Pretty simple design. Now if only I could find 3/4 6061 in that sheet size for under $300 each lol

What you do is art.

Well the aluminum shelves idea is being shelved (HAHAHAHAH I am so funny!).

Instead, I ended up finding some ambrosia maple square stock for legs and a 6/4 chunk of rough cut Walnut that has been sitting in some garage rafters for 57 years now that is 11ft long by 18" wide. Perfect width for high end audio gear...and 6/4 walnut is plenty sturdy for a 100lb+ amp.

Also revised my design. Going to break out the sketchup and see if I can rough draft it. But I tend to do carpentry on the fly without much more than an idea in my head.

Pretty much this with ambrosia maple legs and rough cut walnut shelves.

Hey Timmy, where did you source that slab?

I have been searching for live edge or rough cut edge slabs about that size for 4 days now and they closest I am getting has too much variation end to end (I need 16in width or more from end to end for my project)

I had a GREAT piece of eastern red cedar picked out that was perfect and straight as a (see what I am about to do here?) board.  [cheeky] It was 10/4 thick and long enough to get all 4 shelves out of but some fugger sniped it from me.

The Lumber Shack in Webster City, IA has some pretty nice live edge stuff but most of it is cut for burl and so a lot of their slabs have odd angles/cuts.

I am going to the local hardwoods retail tomorrow but it is looking more and more likely that I am going to be forced to source something from afar (Ohio/Virgina/New Hampshire).

Seeing all these gorgeous wood projects reminded me that we/my fam has a big century old barn in Michigan that no longer houses equines.

However, beams and wood exterior are in great, termite-free shape for those rustic remodeling projects if there are any builders who are in this niche' market.

If you need it I've got a source here (ME) with a big supply of live edge.  Not sure what species you're after but I can find out what he has.

Prefer walnut or eastern red cedar. Open to other darker hardwoods/harder pines/evergreens.

I think you mean me (Vinny), and unfortunately I got the slab local.  There is a guy 15 min away from me with a mill, any wood you want (that grows on the east coast) up to 36" wide 20' long. 

The slab in that bathroom was like $35. I have a dozen more stickered and drying out because the deal was just too good not to buy everything he had. 

He drives around his property in a back hoe, and wears feathers in his hat-- an eclectic fellow I am glad to have met.

I found a place about 45 miles away but they are asking around $200 for a slab like that.
I went scrounging today and hit up an architectural salvage company that had about a dozen oak slabs about that size. I nearly pooped myself when he said that he couldn't let them go for less than $450 each.
I wandered around and found a nice 18 inch wide 2 inch thick by 82 inch long he wanted $180 for. Closer to what I want to spend but for that kind of money I can pick up a piece of Zebrawood, Yellowheart, Purpleheart or Padauk at the local hardwood shop.
Unfortunately, they don't deal in live edge or rough milled slabs.

So...if I was willing to drive out there, would you be willing to sell me a slab for a small profit?  ;D

What TT is that? Nice little 2 channel rig.

Fortunately, I am dealing with maple over concrete for my floors so a floor unit is safe. Hehe. I have an old Kenwood KD-550 turntable. The plinth is a solid block of Corian but I have dreams of finding a slab of Gabon Ebony or maybe Cocobolo and copying the plinth onto that.

I know others have said it but that is nice work!!!

A friend of mine here in town improvised a sawmill with a chainsaw and does some nice work; he's even more of a cheapskate than I am, so I'd wager he has less than $200 in the whole set-up.

My dad and his cousin had turned many trees into usable lumber with a portable mill.  Works great and We've got a nice supply of boards we can use to make stuff.  Dad's retiring and has a basement full of woodworking stuff.  It'll be going full force I'm certain.

Shelves are going to be zebrawood. I found a 17.5 inch wide by 5/4 by 88 inch long slab. It's spendy but it is absolutely gorgeous. I will be picking it up on the way home from work tomorrow.

I do a lot of rough framing with 8/4" x 16/4" lumber (well, 6/4" x 14/4", but who's counting?)

As far as portable mills go - we had a large windstorm that knocked down 3 of my black walnut trees and several monster spruce trees in my yard.  A buddy came in with his Wood Miser Portable Mill and knocked them up into lumber pretty darn fast.  With some other logs I had brought in, I think we did about 3500 board feet.   The mill seemed really easy to operate and accommodated
the variations in logs easily.  That was about 10 years ago and he's still running that mill. 

The Lucas Mill has a good reputation also but I don't have any first hand knowledge of it.

I would do a portable mill in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, we already have a car and 2 bikes wedged into our 1 car townhouse garage.  [laugh]

If I could get my buddy interested in turning this into a weekend gig, I would do it in a heartbeat and he has 2 garages and a shed that are nearly empty.

Warren, you have any of that lumber left? I love Wisconsin and haven't been up that way since the last time we met up in Elkhart Lake. So I would be happy to come help you make use of some of it. ;)

Got everything roughed together and seems like it will all play nice.

Just need my other 2 sets of isolation cones to show up and I am set to finish sand, assemble and then try and figure out what kind of finish I want to go with.

Right now, clear lacquer or tung oil are the front runners.

So after assembling the first level and finish sanding it, I have decided that I want to build 2 more identical units...then I want to use 2 for the base and have the third bridging those 2.
*sigh*...now I just have to find 2 more shelves.

Copy wright issues... Lego enforces it even on the little guy. Its for a friends birthday. He and his wife have a business selling Lego stuff. So if they were to sell these I think there would be trouble.

Just 1 inch dados.

1/2 inch holes were drilled at the shelves on the sides of the legs. The joints were glued and then a 2 1/4 inch cabinet screw run into each hole. The holes were then filled with 1/2 inch black walnut dowels, cut flush and sanded smooth. It looks like it was pinned together.

I will post up more pics this weekend. I decided to do the 3 identical units/bridge thing but I couldn't find another piece of 15 1/2 inch wide zebrawood so I had to order 2 8 inch wide pieces from Kansas City. I pick them up on Friday and then to the shop to biscuit join them, glue and clamp.

Also Friday night, I am going to shoot 2 coats of black lacquer on a pair of speakers I am refinishing.

Sunday, 2 more coats of lacquer on the speakers and then run the shelf stock through the planer, cut to size and cut the remaining dados in the other 8 legs.
Assemble, finish sand, let all the glue dry.

Sometime next week after work, I will finish sand, wipe clean and then start layering on the gloss tung oil.

A friend wanted a tongue in cheek trophy for a bunch of friends who were riding their vintage bikes up the hill from Phoenix to Prescott, which had devolved into a good-natured pissing match about who's bike would be slowest - everyone claiming that their classic bike was WAY slower than anyone else's.  [laugh]

So far, I like it, though a smaller piston than a small block Chevy might work better - not that my head's terribly small, but the piston skirt catches more than I'd like on the helmet pads. That, and they guy who's my source for all the leftovers from motor rebuilds has started casting aluminum and it's easier to talk him out of little Honda pieces than big V8 bits.

Just came into a very cool piece to use in a project: a V-12 block from an 80's BMW 750il. It's going to need a lot of cleaning, beadblasting & disassembly before it's ready - including knocking six of the heavily corroded pistons out of the bores, but at this early stage I'm looking for ideas.

The pistons & rods are just about perfect for the helmet holders I showed earlier in this thread - except for the fact that they don't seem to have the BMW logo stamped or cast all over them, which would probably double the price I could ask for 'em.  ;D

I should add that - as our tiny little house barely has room for a coffee table, much less a man cave that would need a coffee table - my objective is to make something cool that a wealthy BMW owner or maybe even a dealership would be proud to buy & make a prominent part of their decor.

Nope; six of the Bimmer slugs are still frozen in the block awaiting some brute force, and the other six will need some serious cleanup before they find a home in anything - I'll probably leave the pistons attached to the rods & make helmet hooks like the one further up this thread from a Chevy 350 piston & rod.

They do come from the same source, however - my neighbor, the automotive machinist & owner of the $350 Paso featured in another thread. His scrap barrels at work are FULL of treasures!

Most scrap bins hold tons of treasures.

So my wife and I decided to buy some high dollar Amish made bedroom furniture. Heirloom pieces to be sure based on the quality and most probably the last set of bedroom furniture we will ever buy.
But after my daughter moved in, we ended up moving my 2 channel system into the bedroom. The Zebrawood rack doesn't really match the rest of the bedroom furniture so I decided that a new rack was in order.
Cherry with natural finish was the decision. But similar design to the original Zebrawood model. Made a few refinements and away I went. The Zebrawood rack is moving down to the living room and will be home to the home theater gear.

Did this last spring, not much compared to a lot of the artwork in this thread, but it was an "I'll give it a shot and see how it comes out" and turns out, I really like it...now I need to duplicated it in the rest of the house.

2 tone oak window sil.  Off the shelf wood from the local big box store.  2" oak, 1" bull nose trim from the stair tred section.  Minwax red oak stain for the bullnose, natural finish stain for the insert.  Glued and biscuit jointed the pieces together and carefully fit the bull nose returns with a couple predrilled 4d finish nails.  Carefully scraped and sanded the glue resedue (to not harm the stain).  Installed and applied 3 coats of Spar Urethane.

I didn't get any finished pictures of the bar (opposite end of the room from the wall unit) but the bar was faced in acid washed copper with aluminum panels treated with a grinder and backlit. Black granite top with maple cabinets and glass inserts in the doors...

Churned out another one at work while the going is slow.

The frame is out of some sort of African wood we had left over from a job. It's super heavy and unbelievably dense. Great stuff. A lot of work to frame a painting made out of shitty house paint.

Mitt -- I'm thinking of teaching a two week long intensive class for High School students this Spring on the Maker Movement, and know that I need to know a whole lot more than I do about the Arduino and similar open source items (among other things) -- Look for a PM from me down the road as I start to try to get my brain around the syllabus. Any of you woodworkers use ammonia to fume your projects? I am a big fan of Stickley furniture and have made a few pieces but never have used this method to darken the wood. Always relied on stains, etc.

Zilbert, I am super jealous.  I did some luthiery work for my first full-time job as an adult, and I was immediately hooked on woodworking.  I used to have a nice small collection of hand tools, a router table, small table saw, etc.  I eventually gave them away to friends as my career changed and my apartments got smaller and smaller.  :'(

Working with wood is just such a joy: the smell of sawdust, the sound of a hand plane shaving off a layer, fitting a perfect mitre, just looking at weird slabs of wood at the local lumber store and thinking about what you can do with it---it's all such a throwback and so pleasurable.  Keep posting pics and let me live vicariously through you.  ;)

But printing a prototype of a bracket like that one can go completely un-noticed...at least it LOOKS like a machine part...just not a part for one of their machines...


But yes...Im sure I'll make some fun stuff.  (and try and remember to post pictures)  I also printed a couple of ABS models of HSS lathe tools...that way when I grind the HSS tools I can do a side by side to check the angles and such.

An award I made this morning for tonight's gala fundraiser for the local bicycle/pedestrian advocacy group. The space at the bottom is for the plaque, engraved with the awardee's name (still a big secret as of this afternoon...). Welding up the bicycle chain has set me on a search for all the worn out motorcycle chain I can find; I've got a cool idea for an outdoor end table...

My only suggestion would be to put an ogee edge around the plaque with a router.

That would have looked good! One of these days, I need to get around to buying my own router; on this one I was limited to the bits that were in the box with the one I borrowed, so I went with a simple round bead.

How many chains you need?

One interesting wrinkle in this is that the guy who's asked me to make these awards for the past several years (which I've done as a volunteer) owns not only a local bicycle shop, but also a Moto Guzzi/Royal Enfield dealership in town. I'm going to hit him up to see how many moto chains/cogs/sprockets he sends off to scrap each month. I'll also touch base with the bigger Honda/Yamaha/Kawasaki/Victory dealer one town over.

Moto Guzzi will yield no chains to speak of.
Enfields moreso, but there's likely few in service.

The HYKV dealer should be much better.

Talked to him just this afternoon (turns out, there was about half a keg left over from last night's festivities, so I paid him a visit) and he's got several large buckets of dead chains. Guzzis, of course, won't have chains (or sprockets) to replace, but he's also the de facto service place in town for any non-Japanese or vintage Japanese bikes, so they do a lot of work on all manner of motorcycles.

The basic idea would be to weld up a spiral similar to the bicycle chain above, up to about 2' to 2.5' in diameter for a first attempt. I'd start from a steel sprocket in the center, maybe with a smaller cog in the center of that. Because it wouldn't be all that structurally rigid, I'd fabricate a star pattern of supports that would support it underneath.

The other cool idea I've seen is to use much larger chains as the perimeter of a square end table, with a whole variety of steel tools & parts fit into a jigsaw pattern & welded together from the bottom making up the table top.

Maybe have a few cogs intertwined.

Michael and Me

“Opinions are like noses: everybody has one.” That was my grandmother’s P.C. version of the old adage. It’s a simple enough phrase, but if you really dig into it, you’ll find it to be a rather complex theory. But breaking anything down to its elemental properties, be it a phrase, a lifestyle, a car, a religion, a song or even something as simple as somebody’s nose takes time. Rarely do any of us have the time it takes to go about deconstructing everyday things. A large portion of our day is spent taking in things superficially. Quick observations lead to quick assessments with opinions formed in the blink of an eye. A brief study of just about anything will reveal little more than just an object’s form. It takes time and a little mental spelunking to reveal a subject’s content. For the most part, posthaste assessments are not that big a deal, but sometimes, depending on its relevance, choosing to skim a subject’s surface can have detrimental consequences. This takes me back to noses, Michael Jackson’s nose to be precise. Without trying to sound gross, if you look deeply enough into something as mundane as Michael’s nose, you will see the importance of a subject’s content, or lack thereof, and the roles content and form play when forming an opinion, especially in a climate that celebrates pop culture.

I guess I should preface this paper by stating that I’m not a rabid MJ fan. I grew up listening to the Jackson 5 and have been known to sing along with most of his songs while driving alone in the car, but I’ve never purchased anything Michael put out. I do, however, in a very detached way, feel a certain connection with the man. Not on an entertainment level, but in that as children of the same era, we essentially grew up together. Because he and I were close in age, our physical and mental evolution should have been on par with each other. I write “grew up together” because we both did, in fact, physically grow; only Michael seemed to purposely halt his mental and emotional growth. During the time in his life when intellectual growth should have been occurring within Michael, an odd surface transformation began: his nose began to change. The longer he fought off the natural progression of intellect, the smaller his nose became, almost to the point where it appeared to be a fake, empty prosthetic device. It’s as if his body and mind struggled to remain balanced. Michael died looking, acting, and sounding nothing like the fifty year-old man he was. I, on the other hand, a typical human with average IQ, have found my interests becoming more cerebral as I age. Those quick superficial decisions I made in my youth have been replaced by more drawn out, time intensive analyses of things. Not only do I think smarter, I still have the same misshapen nose I started out with. Michael’s nose ties into the discussion of form and content and why a balance between the two is necessary in the digital age where computer users are more likely to skim through information sources just because it’s faster.

I think it’s safe to say that electronic sources like computers and other forms of digital media are the primary sources the current generation uses to take in information. Computer processors help dictate the speed with which information can be accessed while online. Moore’s Law states that “the number of transistors incorporated in a chip, will approximately double every 24 months,” essentially meaning that computers will double their speed every two years. Gordon Moore is a cofounder of Intel, a leader in computer processors and he penned this law in 1965, oddly enough, right about the time Joe Jackson was molding his boys into the Jackson 5. The speed with which a computer can provide a human with information appears to have limitless bounds. But the speed with which a human can process that information has its limitations, thereby creating a struggle within the human for balance. Author and Researcher Nicholas Carr explains the experience in his book The Shallows: “We’re distracted by the medium’s rapid-fire delivery of competing messages and stimuli”(118). When distracted, the brain shifts focus, leaving any content discarded in its wake, much the same way the fibro-fatty content of Michael’s nose was discarded in favor of a simplistic form.

Michael was the undisputed King of Pop. The pop medium is, by design, something that is fast paced and easy for the mind to digest. Most pop items like art, literature and music are form-driven entities, meaning the artist is looking for more of a sensory response from the audience than an analytical response. Looking back into songs that Michael recorded at different stages of his development as an artist provides a glimpse into where Michael was in his development as a human. When you compare and contrast Michael’s work against that of his peers, it becomes clear that Michael chose to retard his brain’s natural evolution. But this requires looking at Michael as a simple human being, and not as a larger than life manifestation of all things pop who lived outside the same mental constraints all the rest of us are subjected to.

One of Michael’s musical counterparts of the time is Andy Partridge. Andy is the driving force behind a rather obscure band (at least in the States) called XTC. XTC quickly rose within the British pop community playing original songs with quick tempos and simple rhythms.  “This is Pop” was one of their earlier hits. Written in 1978, its unsophisticated lyrics and catchy beat is indicative of the type of song an artist would put out early in his or her career. The phrase “this is pop” cycles through the song so many times one might think Andy ran out of words that rhymed together and used the phrase as filler. Twenty six years later, a look into Andy’s lyrical content  finds him no longer swimming within the shallow constraints of the pop pool. In a self-reflective song titled “The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul”, Andy writes, “The man who sailed around his soul, from East to West, from pole to pole, with ego as his drunken captain, greed, the mutineer had trapped all reason in the hold. The man who walked across his heart, who took no compass, guide or chart, to rope and tar his blood congealed when he found his-self revealed ugly and cold” (Chalkhills). It’s clear that Andy has not only grown as a lyricist, but as an introspective human as well.

A look into Michael’s craft and the songs he chose paints a much different portrait of a man and his journey through life when contrasted to that of his peer Andy. Trowbridge Publishing is an online resource for transcribed interviews and quotes from people within the music industry. In October 2002, Trowbridge published a transcript of a VH1 interview with Michael. In the interview Michael is asked which of his songs were autobiographical. Michael responded by citing several from his collection, but the first he mentioned was “Stranger in Moscow”. Musically, the song has a quiet flowing melody with Michael’s voice gently floating over the notes. The lyrics are almost hidden within the song. If you pull the lyrics out and look at them separated from the music, the words appear to be somewhat juvenile: “Here abandoned in my fame, armageddon of the brain, KGB was doggin' me, take my name and just let me be, then a beggar boy called my name, happy days will drown the pain, on and on and on it came” (AZLyrics). When you compare these lyrics to those Michael wrote fourteen years earlier for “Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough”, there is no real difference in depth. Fast forward to 2001. In Michael’s last studio album Invincible, you see no more depth in lyrical content than when he first ventured out on his own and away from his brothers at the age of seventeen. Michael made his money, not by asking listeners to dive into his soul via the lyrics: He wanted them skimming the dance floor’s surface.
 
The human mind grows and expands not only in a physical sense, but in a literal sense as well. A semi-simplistic explanation is that there are three stages of development where form and content play different roles. In the early stages of development, form plays the more dominant role. During the middle stage, the weight that form carries and weight that content carries have a tendency to balance each other out. In the later stage of development, content is in the forefront. As a father of four, teacher’s aide in Alternative Education and Special Education classrooms, and all-around old guy who’s learned a thing or two, I know this to be true. As a child you want the shiny thing dangled in front of you, then as a young adult, you try to balance having fun with earning a living. The golden years are spent wandering the aisles of Barnes and Noble looking for a copy of Walden while wearing black socks and sandals because they are comfortable and you’ve learned not to care what people think. The art of writing an essay is also a good example. In grade school, the essays basic form (structure) is stressed by the teacher. As you age, form remains relevant, but content starts to play a more involved role. At the collegiate level, basic form should almost be invisible to the reader, leaving content left to do the heavy lifting.

Let’s get back to Michael’s nose for a second. It would appear that staying relevant within the pop community meant Michael felt forced to reign in the body’s natural aging process, not only in the mental sense, but in the physical sense as well. Pop music has traditionally been the sport of youth, with young artists seeking the admiration and wallets of their fans. Many people, fans or not, speculate as to why he went about the physical transformation process that he did. Some think he did it because his father was abusive and some are inclined to think that he wanted to appear more “white”. I think, that by accident or design, it was the manifestation of an inner struggle within Michael’s mind. The natural evolution where content attempted to push past form for superiority was purposely being held in check by Michael in an attempt to remain King in a superficial realm. It’s almost as if his nose said “Fine, you want no content… I’ll show you no content.”  I had a pair of shoes when I was sixteen that I thought were unbelievably cool. They fit for about two months before my feet outgrew them. I chose to continue wearing them, favoring the style/form over the pain caused by cramming my foot’s content into a restricted space. Remembering the discomfort I dealt with during that short time frame, I can’t imagine the pain Michael felt restricting his mind’s expansion for as long as he did.

The proper balance between form and content is all relative to whatever the subject is. In his book Everything Bad is Good For You, author Steven Johnson uses current pop media staples like Grand Theft Auto and The Real World to help build upon his theory that even those things that are widely acknowledged as “bad” can, in fact, be viewed as beneficial in regards to cognitive learning. He refers to the process as The Sleeper Curve. In the book’s introduction he writes, “I believe that the sleeper curve is the single most important new force altering the mental development of young people today” (12). The problem with this statement is that, later on in his book, Johnson asks his readers to remove any negative and potentially destructive content from this developmental process. Jello is a food source that has form but no content (spend a day eating nothing but Jello and you’ll see what I mean). The implications of filling your body with a substance devoid of content, much like Jello, where you are conscious  of the fact that you are ingesting something without content, is far less destructive than purposely immersing yourself in something with known bad attributes. It’s like eating a shit sandwich and telling yourself, “Well, it looked like a sandwich and sandwiches are nutritious” all the while ignoring the crap between the bread, not to mention the bad taste in your mouth. Johnson appears to be a “the glass is hall full” kind of guy, and I commend him for that, but in selling his theory of subliminal learning, he neglects the reality that most things that reside within the pop world are, in fact, by design, more half empty than they are half full. I find this approach to be somewhat disingenuous and in some ways dangerous.
   
So you may be asking yourself, “Why is there a push to sell form over content, and why does this even matter?” The world’s population is currently hovering somewhere around seven billion and most of us fall within the average IQ range. Those of us with low to average IQ’s do not buy/use/understand the same things the “gifted” ones do. There is an intelligence ceiling that all are subjected to. But the reverse is true with regards to simple understanding. The MENSA member not only gets to partake in more complex thought, but he or she is afforded the opportunity to skim simplistic concepts as well. Pop mediums like art, music, movies, and advertising share a much wider market thanks to this. The larger the role content plays within a subject, the narrower the audience gets. People of all IQ’s can listen to a Michael Jackson album and take something away from it, but not all will listen to an Andy Partridge and Harold Budd collaboration and appreciate the depth of its content. In his research paper The Messages of “The Medium is The Message” author and researcher Jay Rosen writes in his review of Marshal McLuhan’s book The Mechanical Bride, how McLuhan was embarrassed by his book’s thesis that “the medium was the message” or more simply stated, that form was more important than content (45). Rosen goes on to add  that while McLuhan’s original theory was relevant, his interpretation of McLuhan’s embarrassment stemmed from the realization that the average person of average IQ would not take the time to fully understand those distinctions (46). Simply stated: simplicity sells.

For most of us, music, art, and advertising play a part in our everyday lives. Typically, those roles are superficial and insignificant, not part of any “big picture”. Politics, on the other hand plays a much larger role. For the bulk of us, that role is hidden from view. We go about our days, not giving much thought to the depth, complexities and underlying reach that politics has on our everyday lives. During his 2008 Presidential campaign, Barack Obama utilized pop media like no other candidate before him. In a recent commentary titled The Pop Presidency of Barack Obama, author Tevi Troy paints a picture of a candidate well-versed in not only what out there makes up pop culture, but how best to use those same pop entities as a way to sell himself. Using celebrities to help sell a candidate is nothing new, but as Troy points out, “Obama has sold himself as the pop culture president when pop culture had evolved to a point where no single source-no Walter Cronkite, no New York Time, no I love Lucy-either dictated or reflected the nation’s tastes” (46). Obama was/is the master at picking media outlets that are inclined to cast him in a positive light. Advertising his agenda by utilizing pop sources known to attract people who just skim the surface, meant that he not only picked up votes from the intellects that agreed with and understood his agenda, but he also appealed to the much larger market, those of us who don’t break the surface looking for depth. With recent events regarding the President’s healthcare initiative, we see President Obama’s approval numbers slipping to dangerous lows. Those people who were sold a simplistic version of a complex issue via pop mediums are pushing back against the reality of having a complex content-driven structure forced upon them, much like the concept Nicholas Carr talks about in regards to computers and how humans react to digital overload. I find it ironic that chief amongst the health care complaints, are those directed at the federal website. According to Stephen Johnson, “There is a kind of exploratory wonder in downloading a new application, and meandering through its commands and dialog boxes” (122,123). People meandering on the Obamacare website are actually pissed about having to deal with the very same things Johnson claims we subliminally enjoy.

A much quoted phrase states “You live by the sword, you die by the sword.”  It would appear that “pop” and “sword” are interchangeable words. It can be argued that restricting his mind and body’s natural evolution caused Michael’s premature death. The official cause of Michael’s death was drug-related. I believe Michael used the drugs as a way to quell the pain caused by restricting the natural evolution of his intellect. During the child molestation trial of 2004 (a critical moment in his life) Michael, who, at age forty-five should have had the intellect to properly articulate his innocence, chose instead to express himself in the form of a show by dancing on the roof of an SUV parked outside the courthouse (CNN). Will all artists who fight a similar battle suffer the same fate? It’s hard to say. Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber are two examples of prominent figures within the pop community who appear to be headed down the same path Michael took, slowly deteriorating before the public’s eye. Their surface appearances and actions have left many scratching their head thinking “WTF” much the same way many of us did when Michael took the bandages off his face.
 
Not all pop figures or mediums are bad for you, it’s all relative. The danger comes when important issues like education, politics, or even religion are formatted in such a way that favors the medium over its message. Procedures involving rhinoplasty and gastrointestinal complications due to digesting fecal matter will no longer be covered under the new health care law as of 2014, regardless of preexisting conditions.

I've always loved woodcut prints, so I did the mirror to see it carving into glass would have the same depth that wood cuts give to paper.

I used this old Holbein piece from the 13th century as the model. Like a dummy, because I was working on the back of the mirror, I forgot the image would be flowing to the left, and not to the right. I spent two long weeks drawing it on the back, then two nights cutting out the areas to be sand blasted, a day blasting it, then a day chipping it, only after I painted the gold, did I realize my goof up. I... was... pissed.  [laugh]

A couple of months back, I had a piece sell for an OK price in a charity auction; unfortunately, I really wasn't done with it when it had to go out on the block. I asked the buyer if I could get it back to work on some of the bits that I didn't particularly like and he agreed.

After a couple of hours work yesterday, "Moto Goosey" was at least closer to what I was picturing when I started messing around with the Honda three-wheeler gas tank, and the buyer was very happy with the revisions.

Here's last weekend's work; the Arizona High School mountain bike league hired me again this year to make the awards for their races (don't tell anybody, but it's a fun enough project I probably would have done it for free...)  These are the team trophies for the season-opening race this weekend. The spaces at the bottom are for the engraved plaques the organizers are having made. For scale, the wrench in the first place trophy is probably 15" long.

Very little actual metal work on these this time around, though it was fun - the fasteners are long brass screws and the heads looked big & ugly, and I didn't want the screwdriver slot. I turned them down to the size I liked on the machinists lathe a friend has parked in our shared workshop, then ground away the slot & peened the remaining head to look like a brass rivet.

And then yesterday I got out to the forge to catch up on some projects, including this cool new collaboration with a friend who's become fascinated with taxidermy, and particularly the preservation of skulls and bones. She's going to supply the bones, I'm going to do the metal work.

My brother has done some "unusual" pieces combining Adirondack birch furniture with brightly colored translucent vinyl air filled cushions or small abstract sculptures carved in bone and polished then mounted in a wooden box that unfolds into the sculpture base.
The juxtaposition makes you take notice.

Forge: I have a piece that I'm slowly working on that involves the skull from a deer. Shellac works really well for finishing bones and giving it a little extra edge.

Great metal work though. What type of steel rod would you recommend that can be bent without heat?

I've got a couple of other bone & metal projects in the offing - the woman with whom I'm collaborating gave me a big horse vertebra that's mine to do with what I will, and a pronghorn skull she wants to adapt into lighting. She's also prepping a deer (doe) skull for me, and I gave her the bull elk skull (without antlers) I've had stashed in the garage for years, wondering what I'd do with it. The correct answer presented itself: give it to Drea!

As for steel rod that would bend easily, LazyLightnin, you can pretty easily cold-form anything up to a quarter inch or so. Get a lot larger than that, and the cold-forming tools you'd need are going to cost more than a forge or an Oxy/Acetylene or Oxy/Propane torch set up that could at least give you local heat. Heat will also help you get smoother bends in most any diameter stock.

The horse vertebra is mine, while the pronghorn skull is hers - she wants to put a light inside it; we tried it out with an LED flashlight, and skull is so thin & translucent that the thing lights up beautifully (sorry I didn't take pictures of that).

OK, I know other folks are making stuff -- I want to see it!

But in hopes of getting others back into this thread, here's a piece I made over the weekend for friends who own a local brewpub, Granite Mountain Brewing (http://www.granitemountainbrewing.com/ (http://www.granitemountainbrewing.com/)). It's their logo, a stylized rendition of local landmark Granite Mountain, and yes, I worked in exchange for beer (lots of beer; my last tab for art there lasted a couple of years).

This is a prototype in wood, which we'll eventually replace with plasma-cut metal. The whole piece is 3" deep with the central elements floating flush with the outer surface. The inside is back-lit with blue LED rope lights, while the outside perimeter is lit with white LEDs.

I have a few projects I need to snap pics of.
Did a set of maple and wenge stands for single record sleeve, single CD case and single Blu-Ray/DVD. Sort of a poor man's "Now Playing" display. Still need to finish them and add feet to them.

I also found a couple of nice oak burl pieces. One was sanded smooth and then finished with bar clear epoxy and now resides as the centerpiece on our dining room table.
The other one was more randomly shaped and is being made into a mantle clock for a friend. Of course, I am having a hard time locating a face and dial set I like for it.

Have any of you crafty bastards ever made a dining table using a marble or granite or any other type of stone? 
Any recommendations? Advice? (For top and/or base.)

A lot of work, but it really is a cool piece.

Excellent.  I've messed around with concrete acid staining and it was a lot of fun.  Making a concrete countertop or table is still on my list.  We were gonna do one for the kitchen but ran across a piece of granite on Craigslist for cheap and used it instead.

I really like the look of stained concrete for counter tops and like it as a small table as you have but not sure I want to go that route for a dining table.  Although it's not scratched off the list yet...

It's regular concrete tinted with powder when we mixed it.

Only downside is it's ridonkulously heavy, didn't weigh it, I'd guess 200 lbs.

A typical dining table would be colossal.

IIRC, there are lightweight concrete mixes available.

Not sure I would want stone for a table.

I can imagine how fast a cold stone table top would pull heat out of my nice warm meal.

Last summer I got an old wood dresser from my cousin who had 3 too many and was looking to offload.  After $35 for paint, wood stain, and new handles, it looks awesome and stylish.  My point: don't underestimate the effect of a sanding and re-finishing an old table, whether yours or one bought on the cheap.  Wood is such a beautiful material (it apparently aroses some DMFers  :-\) that it often looks best when left alone or with minimal finish.  Much cheaper and easier to carry up 3 flights than marble, etc., and it looks better (to my eye at least).  ;D

I bought a kiln on Saturday.  It came with these pots/vases/urns/whatever and all the "furniture" to fire things of a ceramic nature.

I intend to melt metal with the kiln, but if someone is interested in the ceramic arts... I don't have an artistic bone in my body.  Two of the vase/lamp bases have been drawn on/etched with southwestern themes.  I don't need these things, but if you crafty bastards want them, let me know.

My parents brought this matched set back from California back in '74 or '75.  They were used for a while, but then stored in the basement.  The wiring was in terrible shape and basically a fire hazard.  I got wiring and switches from Lowe's and went to work.  Now, I have two perfectly good lamps that are pretty unique.

A side note - the table it's sitting on was made by my great Uncle.  It's made from Apple.  I've got an entire matching bedroom suite made from the same orchard.  The orchard was just a couple minutes from where I live now.

So on my recent adventure ride my chain broke in the middle of the jungle stranding us if not for a well-prepared riding buddy who had a spare master link.  The delay and roadside repair came at the worst time but in spite of that, it was fun and it reminded me of Ted Simon's comment that "it's the interruptions that are the journey, not where you're going."

I would like to make something crafty out of it.  The obvious suggestion is a keychain.  Just drill a hole in the middle and attach to my current keychain ring.  But I thought I'd throw it out to the Crafty Bastards group for alternative solutions.  I'm sure you have more imaginative ideas than I.

The first thing that comes to mind would be to mount it on a nice piece of dark polished wood or a nice polished rock like jasper and turn it into a slide for a bolo tie. Then again, we occasionally wear those around here (Arizona) non-ironically, so your mileage may vary...

Love the lamps, Journeyman, and there's nothing quite like having woodwork from your own neighborhood.

Nice idea, but I'm trying to get away from tie-wearing, bolo or otherwise.  I have even successfully started wearing jeans at work but using a pair of kahki colored ones---they think they are dress pants.  Small victories...

Ok...  so, its just a door bell! But, everyone has just a plain old door button!   ;D

Anyhow, at my front door I had a daggy bit of ply wood covering a hole that has the house 'smart wiring' (I dont even know what the wiring does, its like a phone cable with 6 wires inside it. )
on that I had a normal door bell button stuck on.

I though I might make something a bit better.
I had a bit of nylon kicking about, so cut it to size and routed the edges, then gave it a few coats of paint.

Then I went onto google maps and took a screen shot of my neighbourhood, then cleaned it up in photoshop so I just had the roads.
I then sent it to my mate that has a CNC router that he built and gave him the piece of painted nylon to weave his magic on...

so, now I have the finished backing plate and button positioned where my house is on the map..

But I need to connect it to the existing button that controls the wireless doorbell.
And, I want it to have a light.

I dont have power there so it would have to be battery...
I found a small rechargable 12V battery at the local electronics place and I had a set of LED lights that I was going to use as a number plate light on my bike.

To wire it all up I had to solder  a conection to the 3V LED on the door light button (because it has a delay on it) to a box (that was also bought as a kit from the local electronics shop) that triggers a relay to run the 12V LED via the battery. (the LED's are taped to the battery with some red cellophane covering it)

My mate asked if I wanted my house (knowing that I was gunna put a button there) in the middle of the board.
I said that I didn't want it in the middle. Reason being that it might make people think about it... maybe!  :)

So JM, if its RJ-45 what do you think I'm supposed to use it for and where do you think it would be connected?
I have the same thing in each room of the house and at the back door there is one with 2 cables there.
I tested the continuity between the one at the front door and the cables at the back door and they aren't connected!?

RJ-45 is the connector used for a network cable. The cable itself is called Cat-5e or now they have Cat-6. Most houses are pre wired and the same cable can carry either signal, or both with the right connector.

What dp said.  Having RJ45 wired into each room gives the ability to network devices.  Everything from game consoles, Blu-Ray, TVs etc. around the house.  There probably is a places where they all terminate so you can attach them to a router from an ISP and what not.  I have wired my house in a similar fashion.  DSL router comes to one room, I've ran cables to all the devices we need networking for.  Three cables to the living room, one for the Blu-Ray, one for the Xbox, and one for the DirecTV box.  I also have cables running to my computer and to another room where we used to have a computer.

The bar B and I have been working on for a while.

The wood I salvaged out of the scrap bin in the architecture shop when I was in school.  It was a head and foot board set stained a dark brown.  We sanded off the stain and I coated in with tung oil.

How do you mean painting the grain? Are you doing trompe l'oeil, faux grain? I've never seen that in person, but some of the photos I've come across are stunning stuff.

Building is moving ahead on the off-grid place up near the Grand Canyon; last weekend we made good progress on the solar equipment shed. I couldn't resist doing something a bit more entertaining with the brackets to to attach the big 2"x12" floor joists to the footings; the other three are a club, spade & diamond.

If that 2x is CCA treated you'll want to put some sort of barrier between it and the steel, or that really nice handiwork will be gone in a couple of years.  Maybe copper behind it, so you can see it through the cut out?

Thanks!!! I didn't know that - and I sure as hell want to deal with this now while the joists are still open, before the flooring & the rest of the building goes on top and I can't get at the nuts on the carriage bolts any more.  Copper sheet would look really nice, and oxidize to a good green.

Use the same thinking on all the fasteners going into the PT. Hot dipped galvi or stainless. The PT is nasty. Have you gotten a splinter from it yet?

All of the fastneners (carriage bolts, joist hanger nails) are hot dipped, so I'm happy about that. No splinters, yet. Knock on (non-PT) wood.

I wonder if Gerry passed along the story to his family; I hope so. I know I'm eternally grateful that he shared it here, so at least it lives on with us.

I am building a larger one to sell but that has been on the back burner since I have been working on finishing out the basement in the new abode.
I have the storage room, bathroom, my office and hallway framed and rocked. Got the theater, bar and den all framed but am waiting for drywall to be delivered and hauled downstairs before continuing.
Got the fireplace and chimney chase framed in, bar framed, sheeted (stone face), all wiring done and all plumbing roughed in.
I built a set of hickory cabinets for the bar. Bar will be hickory cabinets, Brazillian pecan flooring, granite bar top...faced with cultured stone with rough hewn cedar corners.
The back wall of the bar and den will be done in unfinished cedar board, rough hewn. The fireplace chimney will be cultured stone faced with a cedar live edge slab for the hearth and a rough hewn cedar mantel.

Got tons of work to do but when it is completed, I will post up a build thread.

How do you get the bottlecaps out of the bin? Does the bottom slide out?

This was the "prototype". The cap catcher is just a box. It has holes drilled in the bottom to allow any rain to drain out since it sits outside all summer but the caps simply need to be extracted via your mandibles.

As for a build thread, I really didn't snap pics throughout that build but will on the next one. The cap catcher on it will be a removable copper box to match the opener and the hardware.

You plan to remove the bottle caps from the box using your lower jaw?  [laugh]

I made them so that they can be taken out and put back in by driving some PVC pipe into the ground.
Leaving them pointed at the pipe helps to find the pipe more easily.

We test paint on cars, thousands of paint jobs, this car was 1-1/4" thick of solid paint, so I hacked off a chunk with a sawzall and crafted this as a gift for a client.

That's pretty cool!

This is a favorite thread. 

I started "pour" painting with acrylics recently and love it.  The finished pieces are super lame but there's one out of the bunch of a dozen I kind of like.  Will post that up sometime.

I always choke when I see the prices of media centers like that. We bought one very similar to what's in the link 10 years ago and I think it was $1,400. I still have it and it's held up very well so I feel it was worth it but that's still a lot of money for what amounts to a shelf with some doors.
