Title: FAQ: Renaming a link (ie making a long URL look short)
Post by: Manny on May 15, 2008, 05:59:06 PM
I don't remember how to do it, but I'm sure that soon someone will come along who does and they'll tell us all about it.  ;D

I hope they do anyway...

Title: How to create a link in your post

1. In your post, highlight the text that you want to make into a hyperlink.

2. Click on the "Insert Hyperlink" button above.

3. You will now see a [ url ] tag before your text and a [ /url ] tag after your text (minus the spaces).

4. Inside the [ url ] tag, place an equal sign immediately after "url", then the address of the webpage you are linking to.  The closing bracket "]" should come right after.

5. If you click on "Preview", you should now see your link and you can test it before posting.

Example: I visited the Ducati (http://www.ducati.com/) website yesterday.

Just an update...since the board overhaul, links are no longer automatically underlined, so they are hard to see.

I therefore now also highlight and change the color of the text that I am making a link so that it is easier to read.

Without changing text:

Example: I visited the Ducati (http://www.ducati.com/) website yesterday.

Code:
Example: I visited the [url=http://www.ducati.com/]Ducati[/url] website yesterday.

With text changes:

Example: I visited the Ducati (http://www.ducati.com/) website yesterday.

Code:
Example: I visited the [color=blue][u][url=http://www.ducati.com/]Ducati[/url][/u][/color] website yesterday.

I'd like to point out that, likewise, a person could use the IMG code to make the picture the "text" of the hyperlink, so it could be clicked and direct a person to such a place. Example below:

[ u r l = www.linktomonsterinformation.com (http://)] [ i m g ] picture of monster file link [ / i m g ] [/ u r l ]
