I'm always on 2 wheels!  ;D

Thanks to the new Olympia gear and my balaclava, I'm nice and comfy. The wind today was pretty brutal tho!

My commute is, well, zero minutes... :P

I'm on 2 feet, does that count?

It's still hitting the 60's here for now. Not so bad. When its gets really cold, like 50, I'll just bikelicle in prolly.

Pretty much ride all year round.  Approximately 30 minute commute each way.  Have begun the install of my Hot Grips heated grips on the Monster.  At least the fingers will be warm.  If it is cold I'll take the Harley with the windscreen and heated seat.

It doesn't ever get super cold here. It just gets very foggy a LOT. This seems to be the land of permanent Autumn/Spring and they are interchangeable.  It was 65F and looked like this in JULY. It was sunny and 75F the first weekend in December. Today :

The 848 has a seat/leg warmer.  - let me tell you. It comes with the 4 purring exhaust valves under the seat.
It gets mighty hot.

cold suppers are the worst.

rode to the doctor this AM...  very nice out.  will be at motopia later.  the best is the grocery run on two wheels.  it's a lot of fun when you shop hungry and you realize that you're in serious trouble backpack-wise.  i've had to balance cans of progresso on the tank/gauges....good times.  though the monster probably isn't very happy about that.

i had a walmart cop threaten me recently (while seated in his little securi-cart) when i parked up on the sidewalk, out of the way.  i parked there anyway of course, but the look on his face said he was going to "write me up" for it or something.  wtf, i'm trying to save parking for everyone else, douchebag.  why do people always seem to have sticks lodged up their asses when i want to park on sidewalk, in no one's way?  it's a win-win for everyone.

A parking ticket is Waaaaaaaay cheaper than ONE CAR bumping into/tipping over your bike.

I parked on the sidewalk at the Grand Canyon.  $275.00
Not cheap, but if you'd seen the parking lot and the drivers in it that day, you'd pay the $275 too.

Bungee cords are your friends in this situation.  I have two red ones attached to my Monster most of the time.  Then I can strap just about anything down on the passenger seat (sold the seat cowl).  I've had bags hanging from each wrist and rode home.   [laugh]

Alan's been commuting on his ST quite a bit lately.  He's got the Triumph heated grips plus a TourMaster heated jacket.  I tried the jacket on the other day - made the thought of cruising around on a windy cold day bearable.  Out-the-door cost is under 175.00 bucks.  MotoLiberty has 'em as does Grif's in Lewisville.  The jacket has a three position rheostat; he says he's never had it above the middle position.

I think Scott's got the Gerbing equivalent.

Good stuff if you're out n' bout  [thumbsup]  [moto]

What do all these heated mods run on?  Grips on the moto battery, threads on a personal battery?

You guys got me thinking - again.

Title: Re: OK Who is on 2 Wheels
Post by: never2loud on December 03, 2008, 07:36:32 PM

The jacket and grips run off of the bike's alternator and battery.

The jacket plugs into a wire/socket that is left attached to the bike - the socket looks like the plug-in for a Battery Tender.  I bet someone around here has hooked up a Battery Tender SAE plug-in before...

I'm just sayin'  ;D

I made an adapter from RadioShack parts so my cable off the battery can plug into the vest or the Tender.

Pretty chilly out there today. 30 degrees at my place when I left. 40 is normally as low as I go but I thought I'd put all my best gear on see how well it worked.

Fingers and toes were cold. I had good thick gloves with silk liners so looks like electricity is the only way to solve that problem. I need to get a balaclava big time. Will had a good one last night. Too much wind on the throat and inside the helmet.  My electrovest did really well, so with a few improvements I think I can handle below 40 pretty well.

Just the normal hi performance street tires that are also good for track use. I try to get them warmed up before any kind of aggressive turning.  It was wheelying good this morning instead of spinning the tire, so my traction was pretty decent. My carbs love this cold weather!!

Bryant makes a good point about checking pressure. It definitely drops in the cold.  pv=nRt

Hey D2R, what brand did you get?

I checked the Aerostitch website and their balaclava was full open face. Will's has a big hole for the eyes and smaller holes for nose and tongue.

I got my Schampa Pharoah Deluxe II (http://www.amazon.com/Schampa-Technical-Wear-BALACLAVA-BLCLV011/dp/B000WK24IO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qid=1228960662&sr=8-1) at the moto show. It's done a great job of blocking out the cold and wind. I know MotoLiberty carries some Schampa stuff, but not sure if they carry "the gimp". Stay away from the model with the ball in the mouth. That would be "full gimp", and we all know you never go "full gimp".

I've also got a Louis Garneau (http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=1014002/444.0.17669.56.25808.0.0) that I use when it's around 50-60*. It's thinner, lighter, and less cumbersome.

My only complaint with balaclavas is that they tend to force the moist breath up and fog the visor. For me I'm constantly adjusting vents to find the right balance of airflow to keep the visor clear. From what I've heard, anti-fog stuff doesn't really work so I've learned to live with the constant adjustments.

Course I got big sbk fairing up front too. That helps keep the heat from the engine directed at me in winter  [thumbsup] ...and also in summer  :P . I have had frost bite before on my fingers from skiing with poor mits. I know when it gets to 40 outside without seeing a thermometer. These gloves and stuff I got from Academy do the job fine all for about 70$.

It was to much for me today.  Was a bit scary riding home last night, the Duc was covered in ice when I left the office, I even had small bits in the tyre treads.  No problems though and the tollway was empty so not many cages to deal with.

Do you have protection with the ski wear?  I wouldn't have much faith in a pair of ski gloves.

You're right about lack of protection with the ski gear, but the outer shell layer works.  I happen to have an old set of two-part gloves and the shell fits over leather moto gloves.

North Face outer shell wear is tough and cuts the wind well.   Keep in mind I have not bought or even looked at ski gear in ten years, so mine is all old.

Keep safe, stay off the ice.

I went with ski gloves over liners this morning. There's no armor, but at least the wind protection allows me to feel my fingers after 10 minutes unlike my winter RS Taichi's.

I need to try this for those below-30 days.  I was just worried about movement/flexibility of fingers on the controls with all that glove.

i hear you.  the tourmaster cold weather gloves i have don't feel very confidence-inspiring control-wise.  there were a couple pairs of gloves at REI that i really liked for cold weather, but they were like $120 iirc.  sure was chilly this morning...i wore the tourmaster gloves actually...though i wasn't riding; they help out for a 15 min. walk though.

Well winter finally found us with a vengeance. It's raining, hailing, then the sun comes out, then it hails again.
It went from 70 to 45F in one day and we're looked inside as if it was Mars outside.

I don't know how you guys ride with ice on your tires or deal with -30. that's nuts. Here's to you  [wine]

WHY do you not want to go electric?!

It was all sub-zero icy nasty tonight and I got to work all warm-n-IZ_  :)

I have a Widder electric vest. It's not made for plug in gloves so I'd have to fab up some funky electrical connector splice and have cables running up my arms to the gloves.  I'd rather just use a passive warmth device but I still want armor and the ability to two-finger my brake lever with lighting speed for emergencies. My fairly expensive new winter riding gloves have carbon knuckles but aren't warm enough and dexterity is very poor. I think they are those RS Taichis Will mentioned.

A lady came into my office today. Her husband told her there was some Ducati parked in the parking lot where he works. Due to icy roads and 26 degree weather they all thought he must be nuts. His buddies told him his name is RichD.

She had told me a few weeks ago that her husband just got a job at the brewery, and I warned her he might run into RichD, they do similar type work. Small world.

Warm, windproof, waterproof.
I figured if I can sit on slush and not get a wet butt while snow boarding it would work for cycle riding in the rain/cold/wet!  [thumbsup]

well my situation changed a little.

The wife had am '08 Honda Civic, and I had my bike...
In October, 7 months into our (mostly her) pregnancy, I broke down and got a family friendly vehicle. We needed something that would work well with the infant seat and was easy to get the baby in and out without breaking our backs. The civic wouldnt quite cut it. So I got an '09 VW Tiguan. Which she has pretty much taken over since she can actually get in and out of it.. So I drive her civic most of the time now for commuting. But it gets the same fuel mileage as my bike anyways so no biggie. the only problem is the gay ass personalized plate she got on it two weeks after getting it...

Heck yes I did.  Took me 10 minutes to get all my gear on.  I'll be dammed if I'm gonna take it all off again after that!  I just wish it would dry up by this evening, but it doesn't look like it will.  That de-icing gunk on the roads is slippery and gets all over everything.  Maybe I will hose the bike off when I get home before it dries on the paint.

Being a rebel without a cause I wear only protection on the upper extremeties ie...shoulders and back so far. Rock Bottom Racing's budget is improving though and protection all over is the key for the next few weeks. Looking for boots, gloves, leather track suit, leather riding suit etc. Believe me I've thought about it much at 130!

Rode in yesterday, the 18th...not bad on the way in.  Face shield would fog up a little bit.  The ride home after work was a PITA...kept getting spray on the face shield and would fog up.  Roads were a little slick, but the highway was not too bad with the traffic drying up the pavement.

That wind is a beyotch today.  I feel like a weather vane.  It tries to turn me sideways when my front wheel is up in the air.  Even on one of those where it's not a wheelie, but the front end is really light and barely touching, the wind blew the front sideways about an inch or two.

Will be very interested to see if you can tell a lot of difference from the 1098S you had. You sometimes can only take what the magazine guys say with a grain of salt. Is it wonderful because they told you to say that? Is because of all their advertising $$$ in these tough times? Or is it really that good/better?

My 1098 had the full Termi exhaust, ECU, and PC-III.  The 1198 still has much better low end and mid-range torque. Front end comes up without even trying. Getting on the highway from the entrance ramp, I gassed it to change lanes and pass a slow dude and the front popped up. I hear a 14 tooth sprocket is fun on a 1098, but I won't do that anytime soon on this.  Haven't done any twisties yet, so no comparison on that yet, or any traction control feedback.  Don't know that I'll get much TC engagement on the street anyway.

The sound is really good with stock exhaust.  Has nice high performance cam noises and a little lean popping on deceleration.  A nice roar at speed but kinda quiet closer to idle.  Can't wait to get a good exhaust on it though so I can really hear it!

I have a feeling you will like that scooter. I would certainly like to think it would have a little more poke in the midrange than the 1098. That is the whole point of making it an 1198 right? ;D I have some Acme bricks we could zip tie to the forks if you think that would help with the light front end. [thumbsup] Just trying to help.

If the bike does all the mags have said it does then it might need a little setting up to ones own weight in order to perform. RR mag rider/writer said it needed to be set up in order to perform to it's potential. Then again he said that in order to do that you need to have it on the track in a full on racing situation of sorts. It's best on the track is what he was trying to say. Everything about the this bike is just a click away from last years R model...at half the price! I'd say that's the best deal in town. I want one way too bad now. Sorry I didn't hear it roar last Thursday night though... [bang] Can't wait to ride with ya man!  [thumbsup]

After waiting almost a month and a half for parts from Ducati in Italy I was finally able to finish up the repairs on the black 999s late last night. I replaced the left mirror holder bracket and the left turn signal/mirror. I took all the body panels off and polished them all to showroom condition and finished it all off with a coat of high tech wax. The bike looks like new. I made the ride from my house to Arlington this morning in 28 degree weather which was brisk at 70  mph.

If anyone is interested in either of the bikes, the yellow 2003 999 or the black 999s they are for sale now.

I was on two wheels today.....skating the company car coming from Shreveport around a corner (OK I got tired of waiting on the Interstate and drove through a ditch faster than hell so I didn't get stuck  [evil]).  The difference between a company car (insert rental too) and a 4x4 is the company car will go anywhere!  The only knee dragging done was when my sorry ass slipped exiting out of the car in business dress shoes.  Fortunately no one saw me.  >:(

I'll say this, there are so many idiots with a drivers license that it really begs the question whether or not there should be an IQ test to apply.

NTTA Temp sensors say road surface high temps reach between 138 - 142 F.  Little too hot for my taste.  Even a small accident or mechanical issue on the road could put a rider in real jeopardy of a serious heat related incident.  Careful out there!

How do you get a balaclava under your helmet? Do you have a larger helmet that you use in the winter?  I've been wearing a half mask, but would like full coverage.

You put the balaclava on before your helmet.  [evil]

I have two, one with a mesh top and one full for when it is colder, they are both thin over your head and do not affect your helmet, I even put the extra small pads in the arai and it is fine.

This is the full one I have http://www.schampa.com/product_p/blclv012.htm (http://www.schampa.com/product_p/blclv012.htm) I would prefer it to be a tad longer but once adjusted properly no wind chill can be felt.

I use a different liner in winter that is not as snug.

Yesterday I went for my first ride since the crash.  No real issues with the right hand or wrist but I've got no endurance  :P  Best I could manage was a 25 minutes.  Not really complaining - just glad it wasn't worse.

I rode the last three days on these county twisties. Just got to get in some miles in a warm December  [Dolph]  in fact I found a new one just right outside of town. These roads may be narrow, but they are sure nearer than any good ones from N Dallas.

Hope you guys are getting some riding in (I'm sure Lisa is).  [thumbsup]

Well, I made a tactical error and rode to work this morning. I paid for that mistake in spades on the way home! I was officially the hardest, deepest water I have EVER ridden in.

At least I got a ride in this week as the rest of the week look like holy shit.

I hope no one else made the same mistake!

Yea... here's me leaning into a corner on FM543 headed up to Weston... unfortunately, it was in the Super Duty.   [cheeky]  By the time I made it over to Prosper, the lightning was blowing around so I decided discretion was the better part of valor and packed it home... pretty much in the nick of time.

I am finally throwing in the white towel on riding to and from work for the next month or so. With 75 under construction I have lost my HOV advantage and it is simply too damned hot to sit in traffic!

Any idea what they are doing?  Are they disappearing the HOV lane?  Last time I cut down 75 I was surprised all the dividers and stuff were gone...

The interchange at 75 and George Bush is being re-worked. As a result the lanes will shift around during the construction so the HOV lane was eliminated so it could be utilized during construction. I think the dedicated HOV lanes will re-open after the construction is complete in about 2 years!

Hello from Jacksonville - beautiful day for a ride in E. Texas this morning, so I did [Dolph]

Made a 30 mile loop before lunch, but the Hyper got stick in second gear half way through the ride.

It was kind of nice to put along at 35 mph on the way back 8)

Have not looked into why the shift lever is stuck in the extreme down position yet except that it looks good at a glance.

I'll dig into it this week I guess and hope it is not internal.  Probably look at my Desmo Times manual first.

I trust Rich D's advice not to ride it at all, so pickup or trailer it up there.
